About the Author
Dan Heisman (born 1950) is a United States Chess Federation National Master and author. He is the two-time Open chess champion of Philadelphia (1973 and 1976), and the Philadelphia Invitational Chess Champion (1973). His Penn State team won the U.S. Amateur Team Championship in 1972. Although rated over 2200 by both the United States Chess Federation and FIDE, he is currently inactive as a tournament player. Heisman is a member of the International Computer Games Association and worked at both Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov matches (1996 and 1997).

A truly solid introduction to tactics!

As a USCF 1428 player, I'm always trying to improve my tactical vision. There are a plethora of tactical books on the market and chess books seem to be rolling out like hotcakes. When I initially picked up this book, I thought it was a little too basic for my current playing level; however, upon further exploration of the book, I soon realized this effort was a gem. Mr. Heisman has chosen examples that are clear and uncomplicated allowing the reader to truly understand the essence of the described tactical motifs. He begins each chapter by choosing almost ridiculously easy problems to solve, though this is what makes the book so very instructive. As I read through each chapter of motifs to be learned, along with a chapter on checkmates and defensive tactics--most all are covered nicely--I truly absorbed Mr. Heisman's 'no nonsense', lucid approach. Throughout the book, the Author peppers in pearls of wisdom for building tactical acumen. This book is an excellent primer of the nuts and bolts on building tactical awareness and garnering knowledge that is both helpful and PRACTICAL! After completing this book in about a month, I truly absorbed the presented ideas and had a satisfaction in finishing this fine book.
I would recommend this book to any budding chess player, all the way up to USCF 1500-1550. Beginners will use this book to build a solid knowledge base of tactics, while lower intermediate players will find this effort to be a fine review of already learned material. I don't know Mr. Heisman personally; however, being a dedicated follower of his articles on Chess Cafe and his weekly radio program on ICC, Dan is an excellent teacher and as every move in life has a purpose, so should the same philosophy be applied to the chess board, according to Mr. Heisman. Recommended!

Excellent Intermediate-Level Book

I could not imagine money or time better spent to improve my playing strength.

I bought this book on the reputation of the author and to fill the gap between the easy problems in The Chess Tactics Workbook: Expanded 4th Edition by Al Woolum and the harder problems in John Nunn's Learn Chess Tactics.

I am USCF rated 1727 and still struggled with about 10% of the problems in the book. I feel I am seeing more and calculating faster now. I especially liked the 78-problem test chapter and the "Is There a Win" chapter.

Again, it's a chess book and not suppose to be entertaining but I'm a little bored from it. It's not very interactive even though it gives a lot of puzzles and examples to work on.

I've been working with inner city youth for many years, and I learned a ton from this book. Strong theoretical foundation, touching examples, and detailed explanations of suggestions... this is on the top of my reading list for teachers working with students of color!

Teaching the Teacher how to .....!

This book is a powerhouse. I would recommend it to new teachers, veteran teachers and all that fall between these two extremities. The book is also a must read for those who work on an administrative level as well. Dr. Emdin so powerfully proves that with the right systems in place, children of color, want to learn and can learn in many masterful ways. Emerson declared, "foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds" It is time to flee the status quo with reckless abandon and embrace pedagogical practices that will lead to an "educational renaissance" !

Jackie Thompson is a veteran soapmaker with over 18 years experience in the handcrafted soapmaking field.  She along with daughter Gaily founded Gaily Rebecca Soaps. Their soaps have sold through craft shows, retail, wholesale and private label contracting. Jackie is a Certified Master Soapmaker member and honorary lifetime member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild. She lives on the family ranch in Texas with her husband Stan and dog Boudroux.

Excellent Resource for Liquid Soapmaking!

This book is excellent if you want to learn how to make liquid soap. I was already doing cold process bar soaps, but I love a good liquid soap and wanted to learn the ropes to do it myself. She offers up detailed instructions, both paste and no-paste, and many good recipes to get you started. So far I have made a shampoo and a hand soap - both of which my family adores.

Wish I had this book when I started making Liquid Soaps

I have been making liquid soap for many years and still picked up some tips from Jackie in this book. This book is good for the beginner to the experienced liquid soapmaker. She explains ingredients well, the different processes you can use to make liquid soaps, and gives clear instructions on each process. The book contains formulations throughout and also has a section on how to formulate your own soaps. The book also contains a section on scenting and coloring your liquid soaps as well as ways to solve problems that may come up.

The best detailed introduction to Homer

Back in the 1960s, Wace and Stubbings published their "Companion to Homer", an impressive collection of essays on a range of topics related to the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey. It remains one of the best books on Homer, though parts of it are now outdated, and though parts relating to literary interpretation feel a bit alien to 21st-century tastes. (It is not currently available from Amazon, sadly.)

A follow-up, the "New Companion to Homer", was published in 1996, edited by Ian Morris and Barry Powell. Morris is a highly-respected scholar. Even so, the "New Companion" had its ups and downs. It was certainly more up-to-date than Wace and Stubbings; but it left a sense of faint disappointment at what might have been.

Since then there have been a few more books designed as general introductions to Homer. There is one by Joachim Latacz; a variety of less reputable ones; and then there is this book.

Now, Latacz is an easier read than this book. He is more approachable. His book also really needs to be read as a whole; that may be either a virtue or a shortcoming depending on how you look at it. It is a good book.

This book, however, is the one everyone had been hoping that the "New Companion" would be. We have here a truly excellent, well-rounded book. It is still not up to the very, very high standard set by Wace and Stubbings; but it is more up-to-date, it is scholarly, it is accurate, it is informative, it is concise. Each chapter is an article in its own right and can (should) be read separately. The book is also very reasonably priced.

If you are in doubt as to which book to buy as an introduction to Homer, there is no contest: buy the "Cambridge Companion". Of the competitors, Latacz is the only one that even comes close.

An excellent volume.

The Cambridge Companion to Homer is an excellent introduction to Homeric studies, bringing the best academic writers together in one volume, and providing readers with all the background information about Homer and his age and all the introductory information about the poems themselves and their poetics that they will need. A real triumph. Highly recommended.

Important Documentary of Icons

Knowledgable presentation of the origin, meaning, creation, and use of icons. Great color photographs of the icons with sufficient detail to understand their artistic merit and relgious purpose. The end of the book provides small, color photographs with detail of the icons in the collection of the British Museum, making this book a "must have" for reference. A fabulous buy at this price and a scholarly, yet easy read for those unfamilar with the Byzantine icongraphy that spread to Greece and Russia. You gotta love this book.

Better than anticipated

At first I thought that it would be a rather dry and oh-so-British treatise on the icons "procured" by the British museums system, and a rather bland review of them. I found though, that it was a well written compendium on the subject written for the non-Orthodox and Orthodox reader alike. Beautiful photography of the icons, and an overwhelming majority of the information/opinions on Orthodoxy were correct, which was a pleasant surprise.

Approachable Study

This beautiful book presents a complex subject and makes it approachable. The color plates (all are color) are reproduced well and preeminent scholar on the Byzantine period, Robin Cormack writes the text in a manner that anyone can understand. For the small price, I would recommend one for yourself, and another as a gift!

For seekers of ultimate truth, a theory worth considering, but a great read for even the mildly curious

Today's greatest challenge for physics and cosmology is reconciling Einstein's Theory of Relativity with Quantum Mechanics. Both systems produce profoundly accurate results through thousands of experiments. The problem is that they are not compatible and all attempts to derive a single unified theory have failed. This work by Thad Roberts offers an elegant solution by proposing that spacetime itself is in reality a frictionless super fluid. Written to be understood by the lay reader while providing the theory in substantial detail to the scientist the book is a very enjoyable trip explaining the history of our developing understanding of the universe through the cosmological consequences of a reality composed of quanta. It brings us from our daily lives to 11 dimensional space, what the big bang really was, how dark matter works, and a buffet of other wonderfully interesting aspects of advanced theoretical physics. If you enjoy concepts you will love this book.

but I have a somewhat better grounding in philosophy

I have not finished reading this yet, but I am part way though. My understanding of physics is quite limited, but I have a somewhat better grounding in philosophy. My true passion is social science, and the philosophy of social science. What strikes me most about this work is that it gels very well with theories that I find most compelling in my own discipline. In particular, it seems to fit well with the theories that I find most parsimonious and compelling, but that also have yet to gain widespread acceptance in mainstream cognitive science. This book represents, for me, an honest and deeply creative attempt to respond to the most fundamental questions of any science: the questions of what exists, and how we can know what exists? In addition to tackling deep mysteries, this work also represents a challenge to the politics of knowledge production. Roberts has made a deliberate effort to render accessible a subject matter which is generally understood to be off-limits due to its complexity. So far, I am profoundly impressed with this book!

It contains interesting history and Thad's revolutionary QST model solves many current problems in Physics; it's almost a theory of everything! Very well written. Great pictures. Children, I have always believed, have an innate talent for logic. Perhaps because they are relatively untouched by the "real world" they are still able to reason and rationalize without worrying about what the rest of the world thinks of them. As a child, I experienced a death in my nuclear family and since then have been on a lifelong journey to learn and understand all I can about religious belief and their origins, as well as scientific study on life after death. To say I have "struggled" with Christianity’s teachings and actions is an understatement.

When I was about thirteen years old, I sat down with a Southern-Baptist minister, who was trying to talk "logic" with me (i.e., convert me). The exchange was brief, and altogether frustrating for the minister and me, as I was honestly seeking answers, not attempting to be "fresh".

"God is perfect, right?" I asked him.

"Yes." He replied.

"And God made us, right?" I asked.

"Yes." He replied, again.

"And there is a Hell, right?"

"Oh yes, most definitely." He responded.

"So, if God made us, and He is perfect, why would He make us imperfect and send us to Hell because we are imperfect?"

I remember the perplexed look on his face, as if for a few seconds he was genuinely searching for an answer. The problem was, by "Christian logic" – there was no answer. So in response, he simply told me to stop being "fresh" and to call him when I had "serious questions" that could be answered.

An Encounter With a Prophet by C.A. Lewis is a beautiful, simple and logical attempt to answer that very question.

I was drawn to this book on Amazon.com (where I’ve spent countless hours in the "recommendation" section). Without thinking too much, I purchased the book for my already huge collection. When I received it, I literally read it in one sitting (on the day I got it). I was flabbergasted that questions I had posed to so many people; college professors, a Pagan High Priest, a Wiccan or two, psychics, ministers, priests, rabbis, scientists & engineers, a therapist, pretty much every family member & friend I have and countless others, were opened up to me in such a small, uncomplicated book.

The story, which for me was secondary behind the ideas, begins with Nathaniel. Nathaniel is a high-stress, high-pressure and high-strung businessman, he is late for work (and an important meeting) and of course, it is pouring rain. He notices a man on the street corner, just standing out in the deluge and mockingly rolls his eyes at this jerk getting drenched. For some unknown reason, however, Nathaniel finds himself pulling over and picking up this stranger, and his life is changed forever.

Nathaniel is agnostic, and we soon learn this stranger is a deeply spiritual person. Immediately, Nathaniel begins drilling him with questions, hoping to catch the stranger in that "Christian illogic" trap and therefore, find himself some smug satisfaction. He is, of course, in for many surprises, as this stranger not only answers his questions with patience and understanding – but with a clear and resounding logic that even Nathaniel cannot dispute.

A true spiritual journey is never easy. When a person opens the floodgate of doubt and questioning, the road is very difficult. Many people, like Nathaniel, simply shut the door because at every turn they are met with illogic. They are told that "Jesus and God love you", but if you’re "not good" you’ll go to Hell! Perhaps they read the Old Testament, and learn about a wrathful and angry God, a God of fire and brimstone and fright – and then they read the New Testament and hear a very very different message from Jesus. They go to church and see ordained ministers, people of the cloth sworn to uphold God’s message, turn into pedophiles and miscreants. They watch self-ordained ministers on television bilking money from the poor and downtrodden in the name of Christ, as they buy their BMWs and mansions. They hear of "pious" and "devout" leaders spreading war, terrorism and hate throughout the world… all in the name of their God.

Christianity (as well as all other organized religions) is filled with hypocrisy and misunderstanding. An Encounter With a Prophet can honestly and truly open your eyes if you let it. Look past the "simplicity" of the story and hear the message. Once I finished this book, I did more of my own research and found some wonderful books (see recommendations at bottom) about the "historical Jesus" and even further debunked the myths I had grown up with regarding the Bible, God, Christ and the afterlife.

Not everyone is ready to read and appreciate this book. That is neither good nor bad, it just is. But with a simplicity and grace, which in many respects reminds me of Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha, this book opened a pathway to understanding how modern-day Christianity turned into what it is, who Jesus really was, who/what God really is and how we, as present-day humans, can live by the principles of goodness and light and not of fear and intimidation.

Perhaps it is simple maturity (please don’t call it old age!) – but over the past two years, it is as though a veil of understanding was given to me. I do not struggle with the shattering religious doubts I once did. I do not "fear" death, God or Hell. I do not "do good things" because I am scared of going to Hell if I don’t anymore – I live simply, peacefully and quite harmoniously because I have forged my own personal relationship with the Creator of this Universe and of me. Call it hokey, call it cliché, call it whatever you want – but since the day I woke up to hear my sister was dead, I have never felt so at peace with my own beliefs, my life and the passing of loved ones - and this book is surely partly responsible.

A guide to free living

This book was recommended to me by some of the friends from Amazon.com and i had to wait for 7 months till the book reached me from oklahama city.
This book was such a pleasure to read as it was everything that i wanted it to be. I am a typical atheist and always felt guilty about a lot of ideologies childhood taught me and as an adult could not accept those ideologies. Reading this book taught me to look at my present day idealogies with confidence and boy it feels wonderful.
The authors simple style of explanation is very interesting and hence makes reading much more easier.
The book definitely made me more confident and also taught me to do the things which i felt good and my heart felt good... doing.

Great Book

When I read "Encounter With A Prophet" for the first time I was fresh out of treatment and only two weeks sober. The fear of not maintaining my sobriety was tremendous due to my history of relapse and , because of my past, I doubted that God truly cared to help me. "Encounter" enabled me to open my eyes to a concept of God that not only could I live with, but with which I can grow spiritually for as long as I choose to grow! Life has a whole new meaning for me today! The trill of living grows as time passes! Today, I know that God loves me just the way I am! Thanks

Seemed like a simplistic view trying to justify religious dogma while at the same time debunking it. Basically it is saying that primitive man could not understand the true concept and intention of god, so the early prophets basically lied to get people pointed in the right direction. I disagree, read Andy Weir's short story "The Egg" for example, a very simple and beautiful concept that is timeless. I think any truly inspired message from god would be beautiful, bring nothing but joy, and be timeless. Then as this "Prophet" and his recruit begin wandering around fixing people just by talking and saying the right thing, just seemed very contrived and unrealistic to me.

Any book that talks about love and forgiveness can't be all bad, but it just seems a bit cartoonist to me,as if it were written by child. If you are looking for some really good philosophical enlightenment there are far more interesting choices like Alan Watts or Neal Donald Walsh (Conversations with God).
