The Maginot Line, the complex system of strongpoints constructed between the world wars by the French to protect against attack from Germany, is one of the most famous, extensive and controversial defensive schemes in all military history. It stretched from Belgium to Switzerland, and from Switzerland to the Mediterranean, and it represented the most advanced and ambitious system of static defenses of its time. Yet it failed to deter German aggression or to halt the invasion of France in May 1940.

Much of this historic line - with its fortresses, artillery positions, tank traps, blockhouses, concrete bunkers - has survived and can be visited today. This invaluable handbook, which has been written and compiled by the foremost experts in the field, is a guide to the history of the line and all the major sites concerned.

An excellent guide

This is a fine history and guide to a legendary--and controversial--fortification system. Designed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, then built during the Depression (thus providing work, though at a massive overall cost), the largely underground border forts (ouvrage) faced both Germany and Italy. Behind their seeming impregnability the French military dozed, sadly convinced they merely had to occupy the gros (large) and petite (small) ouvrage to hold off any fascist invasion. Indeed, we speak of the "Maginot mentality" to this day to denote something providing false security.

All of this is discussed and assessed here, but the real appeal of this book is just how much detailed information is provided. I especially like the 3-D diagrams of the various Maginot ouvrage, as they offer a solid sense of each underground fort layout and its relationship to local terrain. I began with those ouvrage that I've seen in the south of France---and they bring back that visit of 15 years ago with their clarity. Furthermore, they make clear just how much variance there was in this massive construction project--all of it designed and built with nary a computer in sight.

The literature on Maginot's line is substantial---but much of it is quite understandably written in French. Works by Mary and Truttman, to name two of the best French authorities, are invaluable and offer excellent illustrations. But if you can't read the French captions and text, naturally much is lost. The Kaufmann's book provides a concise history as well as the all the context that anyone could need to visit the sites today (more of them are opening all the time). At the same time, it provides something of an English "key" to all those French volumes. I know that I will use both together from now on.

I strongly recommend this well-conceived and illustrated book. For the price, you will not find a better guide to and history of a fascinating fortification.

Excellent Introduction and Guide

This is an excellent introduction and guide to the Maginot Line. It concisely covers the purpose and history of the Maginot Line. It explains the technology and armament of the line. It is very well illustrated with maps, photos and drawings. There is an excellent section on what parts of the Maginot Line are open to the public today, and it includes contact and other information for the various sites.

Great read.

The book is an excellant modern study to the complete Maginot Line. Besides the main fortifications between France and Germany, it covers the minor fortifications between France and Beligum that were ultimately exploited by the Nazis and the fortifications between France and Italy, that were successful in stopping the Italion thrust into southern France. Also included are modern addresses and contacts for the fortifications that are open to the public.

Just What I Needed

Logically laid out, beginning with the necessities first. This is much more pleasant to read than the manual which came with the camera. Quite a bit of color photographic images are contained in the book. Written in conversational style. Also serves as a good reference manual. This is what I was looking for.

For Sid the Science Kid fans, it's perfect!

My 3 yr old son watches Sid and has for a couple years now. I love that he's always learning something new with that show. This book ties in nicely and as much as possible with the tv show. I try to sing the songs that they would have sung if this had been the show and my son enjoys that. The graphics are fun and true-to-tv. The reading is a bit more "advanced" than the Monkey Play book I also purchased, but as I'm reading to him it's completely fine. This book also has a crude food chart that can be helpful in talking to your child about what are some good foods to eat. This is one of my son's favorite books, so for that, 5 stars!

We purchased these for party favors for my daughter's birthday party. She loves Sid and wanted a Sid themed party. I bought an extra one for her and she loves it when I read it to her. I love it because it gives her an early start on what is good and bad for your body and why. It is great to back-up what we say at home.

I enjoyed reading this book to my three year old granddaughter. She loves the pictures and she likes anything about SId the Science Kid. She loves sweets and this book did a great job of explaining why she needs to eat lots of nutritious foods and limit the sweets.

Jason is almost superhuman: his martial arts skills across several styles are amazing, his linguistic ability incredible, and his tenacity and resolve, even at age five, are impressive. But despite his amazing skills and his knack for getting himself into places and organizations where he shouldn't be, Jason has normal emotions: he craves his father's love, he develops firm friendships, he takes a stand against bullies, and he mourns when he cannot prevent the deaths of his friends. The action is fast, and the spy and military aspects of the Sea Cadets, a British organization that trains youngsters for the military, seem designed to appeal to reluctant male readers. The novel is violent, particularly in Jason's final (and accidental) mission, and the deaths that impact him are handled with grace, even while physical injuries are graphically described. hard to find books you can buy for your grandkids!

This was recommended to me as a book with a decent moral compass. I always read anything I buy for the grandkids before I pass it on and this is a definite winner.

No spoilers here :~).

Is it realistic? No. One of the reviewers bemoaned the lost opportunities to explore political and pragmatic implications and I believe missed the true value of this story for the age group. It was the sort of things dreams are made of -- both bad dreams and good dreams. Jason Steed has the tenacity and abilities even I - as a grandmother - would dream of. He also has the vulnerabilities of a child. The father son relationship is dealt with compassionately for both. The adventures, challenges, and fast pace make it a real page turner and easy read for the reluctant reader.

There is something here for everyone: friendship, conflict, romance, royalty, discipline and responsibility, challenge. I loved it. Was it perfect? No. But close enough for me! I have just ordered the sequels and have several grandsons in mind for the shared adventure. Thank you, Mr. Cooper. Well done, sir!

Amazing Book!!

I am 12 years old and found this book on goodreads. I didn't think it would be anything special, but I loved it. It is written with the style of Anthony Horrowitz, and is about a boy who is kind of turned into a spy. It is a great book packed with adventure, perfect for kids aged 10 and up. It has good, fast paced writing and a great plot. I think you should definitely read this book.

This is a book that I want to read over and over. And I wanted to have a copy of it for my children to read also. I love martial arts so I'm really glad that there is another series of a martial arts spy kid. Alex Rider ones are too much like a mini James Bond. These are much more interesting, have more plot twists, and general awesomeness.

About the Author
Gail A. Eisnitz (San Rafael, CA), winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare, is the chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association. Her work has resulted in exposés by ABC’s Good Morning America, PrimeTime Live, and Dateline NBC, and her interviews have been heard on more than 1,000 radio stations. Her work has been featured in such newspapers as The New York Times, Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Texas Monthly, Denver Business Journal, Los Angeles Times, and US News & World Report. Eisnitz was the driving force behind a front-page exposé in The Washington Post documenting slaughterhouse atrocities. Corruption and cruelty of factory slaughterhouses exposed

Ms. Eisnitz is frank and candid in her exposure of the uglier side of factory farming. Slaughter of live animals is never pretty, but in many of the USDA supervised plants, the conditions are unbelievably cruel and digustingly filthy. The workers are exploited, placed in harm's way, and are treated little better than the animals they have to process. The animals themselves meet terribly slow deaths when stun bolts fail and stick pit knives don't cut deep enough to allow them to bleed to death before skinning and gutting. And if the cruelty isn't enough to grab you, wait until you read about the offal blocked drains that flood slaughterhouse floors with blood and fecal material. Wait until you read about manure being classified as a "cosmetic defect" that can simply be rinsed off and the meat passed off as USDA select to an unsuspecting public. This book will turn your stomach and make you angry.
You have probably already read many of the reviews and a majority of them come from vegans and vegetarians. Well, I'm not one of them. I raise meat animals and I eat meat. This book is important to me because I believe that Americans have a right to eat meat and not worry about it killing them with E. coli or Clostridia infections. I believe Americans should be able to believe that the USDA seal means the meat is safe and was killed in a humane fashion. Right now the American meat eating public is being betrayed by the USDA and "Slaughterhouse" details this with painstaking research and first-hand accounts.
"Slaughterhouse" is graphic and readers should expect it to be disturbing. But it is also very, very accurate. I've toured several slaughterhouses myself and found conditions similar to what Ms. Eisnitz has described. The USDA needs to step up enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act, they need to POLICE the industry they oversee, not just sit idly by.
In short, this book might not make you a vegetarian, but it WILL make you an activist.

The USDA stamp/seal of approval is a colossal hoax perpetrated on the American public. The agency is, plain and simple, a timid puppet of the meat industry. (No wonder Europe doesn't want our poultry!) Paul & Linda McCartney's famous quote (Google it) has nothing on this book. If I had the resources, I would buy truckloads of this book and give them away. Gail Eisnitz jumps my list of people I'd most like to meet to Number One. What an incredibly brave woman. (And thank you Prometheus for having the stones to publish it.)

the best book of its kind

This book, more than any other, is the reason why this vegetarian is slowly transitioning to veganism.

This book tells the haunting stories of slaughterhouse workers brave enough to sit for an interview with a remarkable undercover journalist, Gail A. Eisnitz. There is very little of Eisnitz in this book--she focuses largely on industry facts and the workers' stories, but the result is a book that gives voice to the animals beaten, burned alive, dismembered while conscious, left to starve, existing without space to move, tortured from birth to death.

The way the modern slaughterhouse works is not only incredibly cruel to the animals but dangerous for the workers. Their frustrations, unfortunately, are often taken out on the animals. Take it from a worker who put it this way: "See, I’m an ex-Marine. The blood and guts don’t bother me. It’s the inhumane treatment. There’s just so much of it."

I love Lang Leav's work. I own her other books, and I couldn't pass up owning this as soon as I could.

I can relate to her work, and it's that one of the reasons we read poetry? To relate and have our feelings in print on a page, even if we can say it quite the same way, similar to why we listen to music.

Whether you own her previous work or not, I definitely recommend this book.

My father served in the 1st Armored Division during the Korean War period, and admired greatly Patton and Rommel, really equally. His brother was a paratrooper in WW II and faced German Panzers and Tiger tanks, but was saved at the Battle of the Bulge by Patton and good weather. That was Christmas holiday time, 70th years ago this year.

An excellent, effective and enlightening 'production and operations management' textbook.

This is an excellent textbook related to production and operations management. I have come to like it because of its highly effective usefulness, better presentation and very easy to understand design, type setting and description.

I have chosen this rating because I consider this textbook as one of the best in the market today. The main reason why I have decided to choose this very high rating for this textbook is that being a business and management professor at an American State University for the last four-and-a-half years, I have myself taught it in my 'BSAD0455 Production and Operations Management' class for several semesters. I have no hesitation or deliberation to state that this textbook is one of the most informative, reliable and best of its kind publications that I have come across so far in my academic career.

Being a mechanical engineer by trade, I have found this textbook as a useful addition for the industry practitioners like me because of its vast effectiveness from the industry perspective. I will strongly recommend this textbook equally to all of my friends, academics, experts, professors and practitioners as well as to my own State University faculty and staff members, students as well as the library resource centers.
