About the Author

Mark Crilley is the author and illustrator of several graphic novel and prose fiction book series, including thirteen-time Eisner nominee Akiko, Billy Clikk, Miki Falls, Brody's Ghost, and Mastering Manga (IMPACT Books, 2012). a great follow-up to the first book

In the intro, Crilley says he did his best to make this 'a real how-to-draw-manga' book, meaning an emphasis on conveying narrative rather than just drawing manga-style characters as art. There are sections that explain his process start to finish, planning a panel, composition, sequencing, inking, page layout and more. I especially liked the section on using point of view to convey narrative purpose.

The bulk of the book focuses on drawing characters, both male and female. Some of the basics do overlap with volume I, like basic proportions of the body/face. However this book includes variations such as a worm's eye view, sitting, a standing kiss and foreshortened views. The harder poses are a good continuation as a level-up from volume I, but the instructions are clear enough that I think beginners could follow them if they take their time to get it right.

I follow the author's Youtube channel and I've noticed that his style has evolved a bit since the first book was written. Lately he seems to be doing more traditionally realistic drawings, many of which are quite impressive. However, this book is more rooted in the manga style. I've read some criticisms of the first book that say it's not authentically Japanese enough, but personally I like that he portrays people of different ethnicities and ages, which I haven't seen as much in the Japanese books I have.

Both volumes of Mastering Manga are good, but if you can only get one, consider what you want to learn. This book would be a better choice if you want to learn more about putting together a full story, whereas the first book had more examples of variations for details such as hands or eyes. Each book does stand on its own, so get both if you can.

A worthy sequel to Mastering Manga

The title "Mastering Manga 2 level up with Crilley" describes this book very well. With this book, Mark Crilley delivers a most anticipated second lesson on Mastering Manga. For some manga aficionados, this is the Manga 102 that they wished the first book were.

As in the previous iteration, this book is divided into 3 main parts, with some introductory and final sections:

Introduction
What You Need
Putting Your Materials to Work: Making the Manga Eye
Anatomy of a Manga Panel
Part 1: Head and Faces
Part 2: Proportion and Poses
Part 3: Bringing it all Together
Conclusion
Index
About the Author

Like in the previous book, several sections of this book are introduced with a comic-book-style page. The introductory sections provide the basis of what you need to know to draw manga which makes this book a stand alone how-to-draw-manga book.

Part 1 to Part 3 also cover similar material as in the first book, with more detailed drawings, but with less reference material.

Part 1 focus on the head and faces. This section includes 7 to 8 steps tutorials on how to draw detailed female and male heads in front, profile and 3/4 views, bird's eye, worm's eye views and even a fantasy cat girl character. There is also reference material for 16 female and male hairstyles for female, 7 facial expressions, various samples of real and manga styled eyes (3), ears (2), noses (3) and mouths (4), various samples of glasses (4) and hats (4).

Part 2 focus on the body. This section picks up with body proportions for various ages, 7 steps tutorials on how to draw female and male bodies in front, bird's eye, worm's eye and foreshortening views. There is also 7 step tutorials on how to draw the hand, sitting pose, fighting scene and kissing scene. There is good reference material on arms (4), hands (7), legs (2) and feet (3), various poses (16), various clothes (4), folds (6), styles (8) and footwear (6). This section finalizes with Chibis (5 samples) and a 4 steps tutorial on how to draw one from a full-sized character.

Part 3 focus on drawing the manga. This part starts with a 4 to 5 steps lessons on perspective, drawing a forest or a desert, and cover common elements such as rocks grass, rivers and rain. There is also reference material on water effect (3) and surface detail (4). This section includes a brief demonstration of Crilley's process of drawing a single Manga page. It also includes thoughts on planning panels, composition, inking and layouts.

This book feels brief, but this is expected of a 128 pages book. In summary, the first book was a better resource for reference material with a plethora of hairstyles, eyes, hands, feet … while this book is a better resource for demonstrations. Well, not exactly true, but that was the intention as we are constantly reminded to go to impact books to download a free bonus demonstration. Unfortunately, at the time of this review the link was not available.

So, which book is for you? For reference material and basic instruction, the first one. For more advanced instructions, this one. However, once you pick either book you may end up buying the other one book as well.

Solid release

Mark Crilley has posted quite the army of YouTube videos showing people how to draw manga styled art. I thumbed through his f first Mastering manga and thought it was a solid effort for beginners but passed on it as my skill set was more advanced. When I saw he had released a second book I checked it out.

The second volume starts off by retreading a lot of what was already covered in volume one. Male and female body proportions, drawing faces and different poses are all rehashed in ten beginning. In the second. Portion if the book mr Crilley changes gears and starts talking about creating scenes, drawing details/ textures such a worn brick, creating believable rain or setting up clear focused comic panels. The second part impressed me and I felt that it was worth a purchase.

Crilley is a solid artist and gives some really great information on how to improve drawing skills. While part of the book recycles much of volume 1, the new stuff topics are so strong they justify buying the 2nd volume.

Rewritten from the ground, brings significant extensions and up to date content!

Having read the BABOK v2 several times, as well possessing an IIBA CBAP designation, I was eager about the BABOK v3.

I'm very pleased about the reviewed version; comparing to v2 I found these key improvements:
* much better readability! The formulations are more easily understandable, uses a more common (perhaps simplified) vocabulary.
* nicer and better designed diagrams!
* update reflecting contemporary 2015 practices -- e.g. agile, experimentation/prototyping as elicitation technique, etc.
* some new techniques added (midmaps, a couple of agile-related ...)
* Business analysis core concept model -- is something like "how to be a good business analyst in a nutshell", it really nails the essence! This has a huge value itself!
* Perspectives -- these are "lenses" through which a BA might perform the BABOK tasks in various contexts. They have a as well a huge value on itself as this bridges the (a bit) theoretical BABOK with real-world practices. I've the perspectives complimentary to the other parts of the BABOK, something like "implementations/examples" of the earlier concepts (which I always missed a bit in BABOK compared to other BA bodies). The agile perspective is a highly condensed overview of the BABOK Agile extension (a separate IIBA book, check it out). I especially found extremely well prepared the Business intelligence perspective, which summarizes very valuable experiences of working in this enterprise domain.

Overall the BABOK has been completely rewritten from the ground and I consider it a significant improvement towards v2 (not a revolution, but still a big evolution). It extends the BA practice with architecture and brings up to date practices.

From now on, without doubt, the BA profession has a de facto indisputable winning standard.

PS: As a member of the IIBA community, I've read the PDF book, though also skimmed the Kindle and ePub version. I've found the PDF version kept the diagrams more nicely, while the Kindle one a bit removed of the advanced formatting (e.g. tables layout, dotted lines, etc)

New BABOK is a Great Resource!

Rather a big disappointment. Despite "better looking pictures"

Rather a big disappointment. Despite "better looking pictures", the content leaves a lot to desire. In at attempt to make it sound more sophisticated and "smart" (e.g. lots of buzzwords, convoluted statements/logic), the content is more confusing than ever. At least that is my best explanation of what happened. It may sound counter-intuitive (I teach business analysis, so you could think I should be... happy about this situation), but I would have preferred a better BABOK.

Humor, philosophy, anecdotes - and the difficulty of scholarly prose

Background: for last Christmas, I bought my 4-year-old grandson a "hand-painted van Gogh," Harvest at La Crau, with Montmajour in the Background. The original is 72 x 92cm; Ben's copy is 8x10 in. His pre-school teacher had presented several weeks on painting (you have to assume there were no details on a biography unsuited to pre-school), and Ben for whatever reason responded fervently to van Gogh. I wanted him to see the dimension of paint on canvas and I received two gifts from him -- he immediately ran his fingers over the impasto surface, again and again; then he asked that the picture be hung, right then, in his bedroom.

Ben's copy came from China, probably from Dafen Village, which is the setting of Ms. Wong's treatise. That's the setting: the *subject* would have to be summarized as "Challenge everything you ever assumed about art, the artist, creativity, originality, Chinese social structure and politics, and WalMart."

When I ordered the book, five months before it got far enough into production to reach my door, I wanted a popular explication of how (possibly) thousands of painters produce many tens of thousands per year of van Goghs, Utrillos, da Vincis, Bougereaus... well, virtually any famous artist you want to name.

What I got instead is a mix: insightful anecdotes from conversations with painters and bosses; compelling discussions of painting factory methods and organization (many exploitative, some humanistic, avuncular); massive tugs at assumptions around originality; and, frankly, boring excursions into angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin types of things.

Anecdotes? While watching one, er, artist (re-)producing one of van Gogh's sunflower paintings, the artist stood back toward the end, then said, "Time to sign it." Ms. Wong pointed out that van Gogh had not signed the original. The artist: "Oh. You own one?"

Sort-of an anecdote: Ms. Wong quotes from the marketing copy of a van Gogh reproduction sold by Amserdam's van Gogh Museum: "It seemed a dream, but this replica makes it possible: a painting [in reality an inkjet - glicee - print] by Vincent van Gogh on the living room wall, and almost indistinguishable from the real thing... This amazing reproduction is delivered rolled-up, affordable and safe, just as van Gogh sent his own canvases to Paris."

Anecdote: A Dafen van Gogh artist who, chafing under the low wages, exclaimed that he was not making much more than van Gogh did.

Anecdote: Always open about her objective to study Dafen for scholarly purpose, Ms. Wong was interviewing one artist, who pointed out that he was also an "excellent and prolific writer." "...since he had been in Dafen far longer than I, it would be much easier for him to write my dissertation for me.... In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is a habitual and ubiquitous phenomenon, and recalls a condition in which painting and writing do not constitute any sort of special labor...."

One commentator on the Dafen scene wrote, "I realized that most of Dafen painters remained kind of detached and regarded painting more as a labor job." Of course, for hundreds, maybe even thousands of Europeans artists prior to the Romantic age, painting *was* a "labor job," and not a sort of special labor.

Throughout you'll all sorts of tweaks, all sorts of unanswered and possibly unanswerable questions. For the most part, this book is a sort of high-level page-turner. All this said, however, there are times that I wish a competent copy editor had made some suggestions -- and that Ms. Wong had complied. Take that last sentence in my final anecdote above: could it not be expressed less syllabically: "In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is ubiquitous. For them, there is no special labor in painting and writing."

Scholarly language aside, what happens when -- the very thing we conceptualize as golden fruit of glorious individual vision -- Art becomes a mass-produced object on an assembly line? Is it automatically schlock?

Ben's little van Gogh is all master strokes done by a master hand with crystal-clear colors. It is, as Ben immediately saw, equally beautiful to both the eye and the hand.

Yoga for Everyone!!!!

This book is an exceptionally comprehensive review of mudras including:
-how to use
-why to use
-when to use precaution, for example during pregnancy
-how they work
Dr Indu Arora teaches globally, and one of her biggest messages is, 'If you can breathe, you can practice yoga.' This excellent book is full of practical information for all people to use to access health and wellbeing.

best book out there on mudras....but

I give this book four stars. She is excellent in demonstrating the mudras & I have already begun to use some of them with positive results during meditation & yoga. However unless you already know sanskrit the accompanying mantras will b difficult if not impossible for you to translate & pronounce correctly. I have been practicing yoga for 10 years & have many friends that are instructors & even they are guessing. She should have a cd to go with or utube so you can hear the correct pronouciations. Give me a break did she write this for the beginner in mind? I think not & anyone that gave a five star review is either fluent in sanskrit or didn't really read the book and apply it.
Additionally she demonstrated several mudras but never discussed their benefits or use for you so why are they in this book? That's nice that they are used for Hindu rituals but what do I care if I can't use it in my everyday life for practical purposes? I really do not understand why they are in this book.
Still, the best book out there on mudras even if you need to do a little further research on translation etc.

The Beginning of a Journey You Will Never, Ever Forget...

"The Teachings of Don Juan" is the first in a series of about 15 books by Carlos Casaneda describing the author's experiences with Yaqui Indian shamanism in Northern Mexico. As a studier of religion for many years (although not as knowledgeable as some scholars) I find these books to be utterly unique in their scope and subject matter. They are not like other New Age books. The journey that Castaneda takes his readers is mind-boggling, and his experiences are simply beyond what most people have even remotely encountered.
Castaneda first met Don Juan in the early 60's, before the hippy movement, before psychodelic drugs became popular. He was studying anthropology in Los Angeles, and Don Juan served as a field source for some fading knowledge of tribal and shamanistic rituals in Northern Mexico. Castaneda was specifically interested in peyote, a plant that gives its users hallicinations and mixes the senses in strange ways, and which LSD was meant to be a chemical reproduction of. Castaneda's first book presents a very detailed scholastic interpretation of his experiences. All books after the first simply focus on Castaneda's experiences with Don Juan.
Castaneda's drug experiences are different from other accounts I have read, because they are intimately tied with the Yaqui philosophy and mythology. The drugs only serve as a means to an end, not as the end in themselves. The first 2 books in the series describe Castaneda's drugs experiences with Don Juan, but from the 3rd book on, the drugs disappear forever and Carlos' experiences are actually more fantastic, more amazing, more unbelieveable as he slowly becomes a practicing sorceror, traveling to alternate dimensions and battling other sorcerors. Many of the books seem to reach a definitive conclusion, only to have Castaneda's perceived understanding of Don Juan's teachings completely destroyed in the next volume. Again these experiences do not in any way compare to magic and sorcery you might find in pagan, christian, or celtic mythology, nor does the "world-philosophy" of Don Juan resemble in any way the wholistic ideals of Eastern religions like Hinduism or Buddhism. How can you describe things most people have never seen before? Castaneda does a good job, considering the fantastic nature of some of his journeys. However, while the visions and magical feats are mesmerizing to read, I often found that Don Juan gave his most profound knowledge while simply talking to Castaneda.
Do to its subject matter, most Christians will find these books offensive, but I promise you that nothing in any of these volumes will turn you onto the path of Satan :) There is a certain participation required from the reader - Castaneda repeatedly affirms that everything he has ever written is absolutely true, but intelligent readers will be constantly wondering if such fantastic things could possibly exist. By turning off this little nagging "naysayer" in my own head and allowing myself to simply sink into the mood of the work and believe, I found that I was better able to intuitively understand the very abstract concepts that overwhelm you. However, because these accounts are SO unbelieveable, SO fantastic, SO unlike our everyday life here in the US, I found that I never confused my world with Castaneda's. It's like reading a book about walking on the Moon - you can understand and appreciate what it must have been like, but you don't start wearing a spacesuit to work!

An Excellent and Entertaining Book

I enjoy Carlos Castaneda's books because they always offer an escape from reality -- in this case, I mean that quite literally.
Castaneda's books involve an age-old technique of storytelling, the teaching of a body of knowledge from a master to a pupil. In this case, the master, a Yaqui Indian known as Don Juan, teaches the ancient Toltec art of sorcery to a young, first-person narrator, Carlos Castaneda. This narrator is dubious and incredulous as Don Juan shows him things about the nature of reality and our perceptions of it, but increasingly he has to conclude that the world of Don Juan is an accurate description of the may facets of reality, and our modern world is merely one narrow view.
There is controversy over whether Castaneda's books are "real" --Castaneda was granted a PhD for his "field" work; but other scholars have found a lot of Castaneda's research to have no anthropological authenticity. Supporters of Castaneda dispute this.
That there is even an argument over whether the books are "real" or not indicates how good the stories are -- like the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, people really, desperately want to visit Castaneda's world. His books are riveting, fascinating, beautiful, and also very scary.
Although later books in the series (Tales of Power, for instance) are better than this introductory work; I think it is important to read the books in their order of writing, in order to get the "lessons" that Castaneda learns in the correct order.
I am a great fan of the books, even if they are 100% fiction. But one is really just never sure if they are. . .

Please don't stop at this book and read ALL the series!

A good 15 years ago, like many people I guess, I started reading this book after seeing it mentioned by many different sources. And, like many people, I got to the end of it wondering what the hell was all the fuss about. I basically got the feeling that Carlos was high like a kite all the time and was being made fun of by the "shaman" Don Juan.

BUT, more than a decade later I have met a friend and after discussing various spirituality-oriented subjects he asked me if I have already tried The Teachings Of Don Juan. I said yes, but that I found it was more a waste of time than anything else, and then he insisted that I read ALL the series, that only at the end will everything be revealed. So, rather reluctantly (and having a lot of free time on my hands) I took his advice and started reading the sequels. Indeed, only around the 3rd book (Journey to Ixtlan) does it all start coming into place. And it does not stop there, these initial events are constantly revisited and reinterpreted to a much clearer meaning in the following books. Sure, not everything should be taken at face value (Castaneda himself only started to understand what was really going on with him more than a decade after writing this book), but there are teachings that will change the way you see reality for the rest of your life, making it a definate must read.

As for the whole "real vs imaginary Don Juan" I think everyone involved in the debate are missing the essence and I invite them to remember what Don Juan said about the "art of stalking" (in later books). It is all pretty evident to me :)

This is an amazing, beautiful, well made coloring book that will Captivate adults and Enchant all school aged boys and girls.

Every single page is filled with artistic, intricately adorned birds, animals, butterflies or fish. Some adorned with flowers and leaves others with geometrical shapes and designs. On 5 pages animals have been duplicated without the adornments so you can add your own to create images that are uniquely yours. Some pages have flowers, trees, and leaves decorating the pages as well as adorning the animals.

A perfect addition to your coloring library, or gift for adults, college students and school aged children that enjoy itricate coloring. My 8 year old grandson was here tonight when I received the book and he is so excited, as he turned the pages he started jumping up and down and it was Grandma I want to color the snake, the raccoon, the deer, the bunny, the turtle, the rooster, in the end almost every page in the book.

The cover picture is a collage of pictures in the book, not a picture that is actually in the book and I found many illustrations throughout the book that I like better than the sample images shown so I am going to add my favorites and a couple of my least favorite one’s for you.

1. 88 pages to color, 16 2 page illustrations and 56 single page illustrations, printed front and back of each page, on heavy weight, white paper.

2. The patterns are very intricate and detailed so Colored pencils, or Fiskars Gel pens work well in this book, and all dark Fiskars colors that I tried did not bleed through the paper.

3. I am going to use Fiskars Gel Pens and Crayola Watercolor pencils then possible my Prismacolor color pencils.

4. I also tested Irma Gel pens and the dark blue bled through the paper.

5. Every marker that I tested bled through the pages onto the back, markers included (Staedtler Triplus Fineliners and Triplus color Fibre tip pens (the dark colors bled through other colors randomly) Sharpie ultra fine, Bic Mark it ultra fine, Crayola skinnies.

6. Book is Square, 9 7/8ths x 9 7/8ths inches.

7. I ordered this out of stock book on May 1st and received it from Amazon on May 10th, only 10 days. It was listed as out of stock the day I ordered it and still is listed out of stock, so don’t let that stop you from ordering this amazing coloring book.

8. Bird lovers rejoice, there are 20 bird illustrations in this wonderful book.

Cons:

1. 14 of the pages have text on the page someplace. Example: Just over the raccoons head this text is printed (Add some color to the bandit-masked raccoon.) Personally I don’t like text in an adult coloring book and especially in the coloring area. However with text only on14 pages we still have 74 pages without text so I am not reducing my star rating.

2. Printed front and back of each page, all markers and some gel pens bleed through the pages.

3. A few of the images have some areas with miniscule details, this is really not a con because you can just color over those areas and the lines will become accents like shadows and texture.

Beautiful but printed on both sides

This is a really beautiful book of coloring designs. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is printed on both sides of each sheet of paper.

Sadly, some of the designs stretch across both sheets of paper and that makes it very difficult to draw as the sheets are bound into the book rather than having perforated pages. I was able to push hard and essentially bend the binding to get the book to lay fairly flat.

I am on my second book of these designs and I wanted to color some from both sides and I had problems with some of my markers bleeding through.

The paper is nice heavy weight and is bright white. The designs are really beautiful. I love this artist's ability to take a beautiful drawing of an animal or insect and turn it into such an intricate and gorgeous coloring page. Because it is intricate, I do have to use my magnifying lamp from time to time.

I just wish that the artist and publishing company had printed on side of the paper. They could have turned the book into two books - with half as many designs in each and I would gladly have purchased both. I hope they consider this in the future or provide us with an additional set of larger format prints of a few of the most popular designs - printed one side only.

Even with this issue, I still think this is an outstanding color book. As I mentioned, I just recently bought my second one (which is how I can give you the video of the blank book instead of the one that I colored. I was happy to buy the second book and will enjoy coloring the "other" side in this one.

Want to age beautifully, and live longer and healthier?

This is a good book that guides you to ubderstand a basic ideas of what Sirtfood is. It also gives a good diet menus. I highly recommend someone who wants to live longer and healthier, and you will be beautiful inside and outside by Sirtfood. Since I did try Sirtfood in everyday meal, I never get hungry. Sirtfood suppresses my appetite even I eat normal amount!!!
