There are a total of 25 songs in this book of 128 pages. I can't see how one would not like this book, unless one is a completist and wants the complete Beatles. The Beatles made a total of 275 songs. Putting 275 songs in one book would result in a fat, heavy and unwieldy 1,408 pages (= 128 x 11)! This book of "only" 25 songs is easier to handle, and it's got some of their better songs. Unlike a 1,408 page mammoth sized book, if this book were to fall on your toes, they'll still be safe. I would hate to play with steel toed boots.... ;-)

Caravaggio: A Life, by Helen Langdon

A powerful and illuminating biography-the first in English in two generations-of one of the most popular painters of all time.

Of all the great Italian painters, the seventeenth-century master Caravaggio speaks most clearly and powerfully to our time. His early paintings of cardsharps, musicians, and street vendors convey his fascination with the Roman demimonde; his stark and brilliant religious paintings convey the world of the poor and the outcast and the religious experience of the individual with a directness our age can recognize.

Caravaggio lived hard and died young, having fled Rome for Sicily, apparently after murdering another man in a dispute; his life is one of the most colorful of any artist's. In this vivid and beautifully written biography, Helen Langdon tells the story of the great painter's life and times in a way that leaves the reader with a renewed appreciation of his art.

Caravaggio painted a fairly small number of works, many of them for settings in Rome, Naples, and Sicily, where they remain today; and he painted directly from human models. So the story of his life and times reveals Italian society of the period-involving powerful patrons, sybaritic cardinals, and saints, as well as street boys, prostitutes, and rivalrous painters.

Langdon has spent a lifetime studying Caravaggio; this biography, the first in English in two generations, shows us Caravaggio's genius with the striking clarity of his own paintings.

Amazon.com Review
Seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin once said that Caravaggio came into the world to destroy painting. Helen Langdon's marvelous biography suggests that rather than destroying painting, the Milanese artist gave it a new lease on life. Upon his arrival in Rome, Caravaggio ended a tradition of Italian Renaissance painting with his radically new naturalistic style, which continues to dazzle and influence viewers today. Beautifully poised between biographical scholarship and artistic appreciation, Langdon's book provides the reader with a complex, fascinating portrait of Caravaggio, still the rebel and outsider of the popular imagination, but also immersed in the Roman world of art, politics, and patronage. Some of the finest sections of the book vividly evoke the streets and brothels of early 17th-century Rome, which provided Caravaggio with the inspiration for many of his early works. By contrast, the later sections--which deal with Caravaggio's exile and commissions in Naples, Malta, and Sicily--seem rather brief and truncated, giving the final third of the book a rather unbalanced feel. This is, however, partly due to the elusiveness of Caravaggio himself--with little direct contemporary documentation on the painter, he often slips into the shadows, evading the scrutiny of even the most persistent biographer.

Langdon's achievement here is to produce a compelling portrait of the artist that throws new light on his paintings. Here is a painter who was proud, difficult, and arrogant, yet highly intellectual in his appreciation of the changing face of both Catholicism and scientific enquiry. Written with great historical clarity, and supplemented by 42 magnificent color illustrations, Helen Langdon's Caravaggio is a worthy contribution to scholarly study of this artist. --Jerry Brotton

From Publishers Weekly
At once more scholarly and less polemical than Desmond Seward's 1998 Caravaggio: A Passionate Life, Langdon's study of the Renaissance painter conveys a picture of Michelangelo da Caravaggio (1573-1610) as an artist amid rivals and intrigues without losing sight of his work and its significance. Not that Langdon downplays the juicy bits: she offers documented details on the scandals and rivalries, but does so without sensationalism or dependence on conjecture. While Seward railed against homoerotic interpretations of Caravaggio's works, and seemed particularly hostile to Derek Jarman's highly speculative 1987 film, Caravaggio, Langdon is unfailingly even-handed. In keeping with her focus on Caravaggio the artist (as opposed to Seward's man of faith), Langdon presents the relationship with Cardinal Francesco del Monte, for whom he served as artist-in-residence, in terms of career significance rather than personal relationships. Through del Monte, Caravaggio made contacts with church officials and patrons, and also with other painters, many of whom became rivals or detractors. The last section of the book is a balanced account of Caravaggio's induction into the Catholic order of the Knights of Malta (an honor seemingly requiring him to have lied about his family's lineage), his imprisonment in a Maltese dungeon for dueling with a Knight of higher rank and his legendary escape. Without downplaying Caravaggio's personal oddity and violent tendencies, Langdon approaches her subject with a sympathetic yet almost clinical eye. She scours the archives, examining police documents and bringing court records to light. In the end, she produces a finished view of an artist who helped redefine realism in art, even as his increasingly humbling depictions of people alienated him from painters and patrons, and fed his public image as a scoundrel and madman. 56 b&w illustrations, 42 color plates. From Library Journal
British scholar Langdon's masterly achievement is to integrate Caravaggio's art and life in a convincing and vividly delineated re-creation of his world. The themes of artistic patronage and practice, politics, religion, and criminality are effectively woven together to illumine the artist's work and behavior. Not only has Langdon synthesized an unprecedented amount of material to evoke the world within which Caravaggio labored but she has simultaneously created a freshened and deepened appreciation of his paintings. While occasionally venturing a bit far afield in the pursuit of a more fully rounded picture of his social milieu, she never fails the works themselves. Even readers already immersed in Caravaggio scholarship cannot fail to savor this brilliant conjunction of the formal and iconographic with the contextual, intellectual, spiritual, and social preoccupations of the moment. No previous English language work has so compellingly situated this artist in the ethos of his epoch. Art collections beyond the elementary level will need to acquire this informed, insightful, and eloquent opus.ARobert Cahn, Fashion Inst. of Technology, New York

As clear a portrait as we can hope for, currently...
By Stopheles
Langdon's research payed off in this beautiful look at one of the Late Renaissance's most powerful (and mysterious, and notorious) painters. Sadly, most of what we know of Michelangelo Caravaggio's life is through second-hand sources -- police records and such -- but Langdon seems to have pored through every bit of esoterica related to the painter's relation to his time, his culture, and his peers. What we get for her troubles is a portrait of a man whose devotion to religion was so strong that he would do anything -- including lying about his lineage -- to maintain a secure place as a "defender of the faith."
Sadly, the one-star review on this page has a point: many of Langdon's statements are qualified with "perhaps", "almost certainly," etc. This, however, is one of the prices we pay for any attempt to pin down an elusive person who lived on the fringes of a society which passed four hundred years ago. I much preferred this reading to, for example, Desmond Seward's CARAVAGGIO of the same year, in which the author ranted against any recent interpretations of homoeroticism in Caravaggio's sensual paintings, and even against the concept of Caravaggio -- a notoriously violent and tumultuous figure in the history of painting -- having actually earned his lifetime reputation as a criminal!
Beautifully illustrated, well documented, and written with both a sensitivity towards the subject and a refusal to let that sensitivity obscure "the dirt". ..this is a significant addition to the study of one of painting's more fascinating figures. I highly recommend it.

Light inside the Shadows
By A Customer
I found this book to be very entertaining as well as educational. The author did a great job of recreating the setting of Carravaggio's life; the important characters and atmosphere of all the places the artist lived in his nomadic life. Also, I look at Carravaggio's paintings in a new light and am even more impressed and moved by them than previously. Carravaggio's was a tragic life. The author captures the sense of impending doom that hanged over the artist's head like an executioner's sword. The author did a great job of bringing the artist to life with what little is actually known about him, through records, accounts, and most of all his paintings. Through it all there is the sense of an awesome talent and fragile ego, that both humbles and angers all who knew him. I came away realzing that Carravaggio was a man of his times as well as an artist of all time.

Everything you need to know - and more - can be found in this book. Unfortunately, some parts suffer from a clunky writing style and odd turns of the phrase. Better editing would have helped it immensely.

Good Beginner Book
By dino
This book is probably a good introduction to architectural photography for beginners. Over 50% of the book is very basic stuff, rule of thirds, golden ratio, exposure, difference between full frame and cropped sensor cameras, how to choose a tripod.... Things you can find in any basic photography book.

The architecture specific section details some good basic techniques. The authors photos are quite good, I would be very happy if I could make photos of this quality. However, the description of the technique used for each photo is very curse: contains the focal length and exposure but few details of the photo capture, and no details of the digital manipulation for each photo which would be very helpful.

Most interestingly, the author speak often about how important a tilt shift lens is, but then gives no details on how to use one! How about a chapter on using a tilt shift lens?

The last part of the book is dedicated to digital image processing. The HDR section for Photomatix is quite good if you have never used the software, although cursory. The section on Photoshop I believe is out of date, it doesn't appear to be CS6 compatible.

Overall, if you are a beginning photographer, then this if probably good information. If you are an experienced photographer and looking for advanced techniques, you'll probably be disappointed.

A FANTASTIC READ
By Jeff Ornstein
As an architect with over forty years in the design of commercial buildings; and as a photographer for over fifty years, i have to say that this is a must read for ANYONE interested in photographing buildings and other man-made structures.

The technical information and the aspects of photographing are 'right-on' and leads to an understanding of the life of a building. The and of the photograph is almost as important as all the technical information.

There is great discussion as to the use of the images; from commisioned work on a specific building to the making of an 'art' image for the photographer's use and enjoyment.

In my own work I have been employing HDR for interior shots for about nine years. The discussion of this by the author is informative without being over the top.

This is definately a book I would recomend to anyone. It is also a must for any practicing architect or engineer.

Detailed But Boring
By Conrad J. Obregon
I usually expect that there will improvements in the second edition of a book over the first. Unfortunately, after looking at my review of the first edition of this book, I found the improvements to be marginal.

After a brief introduction to the history of architectural art, the book has three sections that deal with camera technology, shooting techniques and image processing. Throughout the emphasis is on the geometry of architectural photography, emphasizing how distortion can creep into such photographs and suggesting techniques for mitigating those distortions. The author's writing is straight forward, and with one or two exceptions comprehensive. It is also quite dull. It might even incline the reader to think architectural photography is boring.

The author emphasizes the conflict between photographer and architect, in that the architect wants to display his design art, while the photographer may be more interested in photographic art. Unfortunately, while there are a few artistic images, little of the book is dedicated to how to make architectural images photographically more artful.

Interior architectural photography is covered, but only briefly, and with little instruction on lighting, which is one of the key elements of this sub-genre.

The section on post-processing will seem like old hat to experienced Photoshop users, except for the section on the lens correction tool, which is a little more detailed than most explanations. The sub-sections on the use of HDR and panoramic stitching software seemed more extensive than in the last edition, reflecting the increased popularity of these tools, although curiously the author demonstrates stitching software using Hugin, which is freeware and, in my experience, a little slower than, say, an industry standard like PTGUI. On the other hand, Schulz also provides instruction on the Photoshop implementations of HDR and stitching, which are perfectly respectable and available within Photoshop, if not often the tools of choice of specialists. Even though no other author has dealt with the subject (as far as I know), I had hoped that Schulz would deal with stitched image projections, but that topic was unmentioned.

If you are interested in exterior architectural photography, this book will tell you everything you need to know, although you might have to stifle a yawn.

The Landmark Arrian: The Campaigns of Alexander (Landmark Books)From Pantheon

The Landmark Arrian is an important new edition of The Campaigns of Alexander, the most authoritative ancient account of one of the world’s most brilliant military leaders.

During twelve years of continuous campaigns, Alexander conquered an empire that stretched from the shores of the Adriatic to the edge of modern India. Arrian’s history of those conquests, the most reliable and detailed account to emerge from the ancient world, is a work that will fascinate readers interested in classical studies, the history of warfare, and the origins of East-West tensions that still simmer today in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. Drawing on Ptolemy’s memoirs and other sources that have not survived antiquity, Arrian’s portrait of Alexander is unmatched for its accuracy and immediacy. Having served as a high Roman official with command of an army, Arrian had a unique perspective on Alexander, imbued with a level of understanding that only firsthand military experience can provide.

In the richly illustrated and annotated style of the Landmark series, The Campaigns of Alexander, which features an engaging and eloquent new translation by Pamela Mensch, brings together some of the preeminent classics scholars at work today to create what is certain to be the definitive edition of this essential work of history.

Anabasis Alexandrou (The Campaigns of Alexander), by Lucius Flavius Arrianus, a Roman of the second century, is the principal literary source for modern accounts about the Macedonian conqueror. If its composition three centuries after Alexander the Great lived inherently raises scholarly questions, Arrian’s account possesses a narrative momentum that will always interest general readers of ancient Greek history. To that audience, the editors have directed their Landmark series, which counts Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon in its prior lineage. Its formula of maps, photographs, chronologies, footnotes, and appendixes exceptionally elucidates texts without impeding their flow; readers may digress into academic controversies or forge ahead to the next battle, according to their wont. Arrian satisfies the latter inclination: historians use his information to reconstruct Alexander’s battlefield tactics, which this volume’s charts graphically depict. Arrian’s Roman audience harbored additional curiosities about Alexander, such as omens of his divinity, purges of his retinue, or incidents damaging to his reputation such as the destruction of the Persian capital Persepolis. A dual-use technology, the Landmark package is ideal for library needs: students may study, and browsers may browse. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
"Skillfully edited by James Romm... and supplemented with a panoply of maps, illustrations and background essays by leading Alexander scholars...the most thrilling volume in this fine series." --Steve Coates, The New York Times Book Review

"The battle maps are the best in the entire series... Pamela Mensch's new translation is both literal and fast-paced... An ideal introductory text to the career of Alexander." --Victor Davis Hanson, New Criterion

""There are hundreds of maps telling stories all their own ... Alexander's conquests stretched across the known world - this is the first edition of Arrian to show that world in all its vastness."  --Steve Donoghue, The National

"If, like me, you have never read more than an excerpt or two from Arrian's 'The Campaigns of Alexander,' you really should read this book." --N.S. Gill, About.com

"Sumptuously annotated and lavishly illustrated...Arrian is by far our best and most reliable source for the events he describes." --Tom Holland, The Wall Street Journal

Great Contents, Declining Book Quality
By A. K. Olsen
This is a nit-picky review, since I don't write to review the book's contents, which are equal to the other Landmark volumes and of great value. I only write to lament the declining quality of the book itself compared to previous hardcover versions of Landmark volumes (Thucydides and Herodotus--I haven't seen the Xenophon yet). This book is a hard-paper (not cloth), perfect bound (not stitched) book. The Thucydides and Herodotus volumes were true "hardback"--stitched binding with cloth boards. It's a pity that publishers can apparently get away with putting great books in inferior packages these days and still charge the same amount. As one who cares about the physical quality of a book as well as its contents, it was a disappointment.

A Great Story About a Great Historical Figure
By Alan Romm
Full disclosure : James Romm is my son, so my bias is understandably positive.

With that said, a few thoughts and observations about the book might prove useful to both the serious scholar and the 'regular' reader.

Alexander is one of history's most exciting and provocative figures. Here is a young man who, while still in his 20s, lead an army of thousands of battle hardened warriors, over a period of ten years, many miles from home, and conquered most of the then known world; while maintaning total control over this vast army through sheer genius, charisma, and strenght of personality.

The battles he fought were hallmarks of military brilliance which are beautifully portrayed in the battle diagrams which Jamie tells me are unique and most carefully researched. Together with the description one gets a real feeling for the blood and excitment of ancient hand to hand combat, which of course those battles were.

The text reads like a novel, one could almost say its a real page turner!

Read and enjoy!

Definitive edition thats well illustrated and maintains the integrity of the original work
By J. Swerdlin
A very well delineated edition. I had struggled with The Campaigns of Alexander previously, and this book changed that without bastardizing the original work.

Arrian offers quite a comprehensive and rich account. The editor does a wonderful job of providing illustrations and footnotes that shed light on things that one may otherwise find unclear. Its very clean and makes The Campaigns of Alexander a much more accessible, useful and enjoyable read.

I would absolutely recommend it- two thumbs way up.

Feminine Gospels: Poems, by Carol Ann Duffy

A new collection of poems ranging over the experience of women―historical and imagined, real-life and larger than life―from the award-winning author of The World's Wife.

From the sadness of Elizabeth I, looking back on her long and powerful but lonely life, to the travails of a woman whose work is literally never done as she continues to trawl the seas to feed her billion offspring, to a movingly lyrical reflection on the beauty of a growing child, Carol Ann Duffy explores in this volume the myriad components of women's lives and loves through the crystallizing prism of poetry. Sometimes erotic and personal, sometimes historical and grand, sometimes witty and full of surprises, the poems in Feminine Gospels are all beautifully crafted works that are as varied in style as the poems in Duffy's earlier acclaimed volume The World's Wife. Together, they will challenge and entertain as they explore the fullness of the female condition through their author's unique poetic voice.

One of Britain's premiere poets here does what she does best, joining wild, surrealistic imagery and pointillist detail to create sharply realized, visionary poems. This collection emphasizes a frequent theme in Duffy's work: the power and complexity of feminine archetypes. Some of the characters who occupy these poems are familiar--Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, the Virgin Mary, Elizabeth I--but more are Duffy's inventions, such as the woman whose hometown was etched like a tattoo across her body, and the woman who dieted herself down to microscopic size. Clever conceits all, but Duffy never settles for mere cleverness. Her poetic technique is sure and subtle: long, gamboling lines seem casual but scan as exacting iambic pentameter; word choices seem conversational but express internal rhymes. A masterful long poem in which the entire student body of a girls' school becomes convulsed with laughter and changes the teachers' lives shows Duffy's skill at its peak. Shorter lyrics, some erotic and others tender, round out a mature and compelling collection. Patricia Monaghan

“One of Britain's premiere poets here does what she does best, joining wild, surrealistic imagery and pointillist detail to create sharply realized, visionary poems . . . Duffy never settles for mere cleverness. Her poetic technique is sure and subtle.” ―Patricia Monaghan, Booklist

“Carol Ann Duffy is at once lyrical and subversive, delightful and dangerous. No other poet I know occupies a place between such apparent contradictions.” ―Billy Collins, Poet Laureate

“[Duffy writes] with lyric intensity . . . She moves through the lives she invents with a kind of casual confidence.” ―Elaine Feinstein, The Guardian (London)

“Beautiful . . . Feminine Gospels shows its author still exploring, testing her imaginative powers and masterly way with language.” ―Lesley Duncan, The Herald (Glasgow)

“[Carol Ann Duffy's] work has a kind of muscular, lyrical intensity, yet is always rooted in the muck and mulch of real experience.” ―Adam Newey, New Statesman

A slow start, on the whole this is an extraordinary collection of humorous, intelligent, beautiful poems. Recommended
By Juushika
A collection of 22 poems, Feminine Gospels can approximately be divided into: poems of sometimes comical feminine traits and archetypes, one long poem, and poems on women and metaphysical matters. It's a wide breadth for such a small book, all written in Duffy's sometimes-playful, sometimes-rhyming, empathetic language. The quality varies, but I believe the book gets better as it goes on. The archetypal poems didn't appeal to me, but the long poem, The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High, is brilliant and justifies the entire collection, and the denser, metaphysical poems that follow are all beautiful. Recommended.

Whether the poems are intentionally divided, I couldn't say--but there seems to be a clear difference between the thirds of the book. The first third explores the lives of beautiful women from Helen of Troy to Marilyn Monroe, a woman who diets herself down to almost nothing, a woman who's subbed for dozens of historical men's roles, and other stories of female traits (shopper, dieter) and archetypes (virgin, crone). Many of these poems share an irreverent, humorous tone; many of them mesh reality with fantastical events in a way that much reminds me of Atwood's The Edible Woman. Personally, I don't identity with any of these feminine archetypes, and I'm not a fan of humor--and so these poems, however skilfully written, left little impression on me. That may be a personal complaint, and other readers may have a better response to this section.

The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High follows. 20 times longer than the other selections, it's the story of laughter which infects a British girl's school, and it's word-perfect: Duffy's unexpected rhymes are an ideal match to the story's laughter and joy, and her voice also lends well to the remarkably sensitive emotional impact that the laughter has on the teachers. Joyous, liberating, empathetic, this long poem is well-rounded and a complete success--it alone justifies picking up this collection. The final third is made up of poems on words, umbilical cords, death, and love--more poetic, more metaphysical topics. Duffy's style curls in on itself, rich and dense; poems may require two or three readings, but they reward that effort: each a quiet, complex, metaphysical study, these poems are thoughtful and beautiful. So while this collection was initially not to my liking, it improves as it goes on and is by the end a distinct success. With such a wide breadth, there should be a poem here for every reader, and Feminine Gospels is a good place to begin with Duffy's work--I was fairly new to her poetry, and found this collection varied, approachable, and a joy to read. I recommend it.

Amazon.com Review
While authors of entry-level brewing books do well to alleviate the fears of anxious new brewers, advanced writers benefit from a pointedly informative approach. Dave Miller's dry, technically versed style has earned him widespread respect through his own publications as well as his work with Brewing Techniques, the first-rate magazine for small-scale brewers. Really an update to his classic Complete Handbook of Home Brewing, Dave Miller's Homebrewing Guide is clear enough to introduce advanced techniques to the average home-brewer, yet thorough enough to provide a permanent reference for the expert.

Miller manages to improve upon his earlier book--itself one of the finest advanced brewing books available--by updating and better organizing the information. While the Homebrewing Guide does provide a cursory introduction to basic brewing techniques and a sampling of supplementary topics (kegging, filtration), its real value is in the thoroughness and clarity with which all-grain brewing is described. Grain mashing, for instance, is discussed in three different chapters: a summary of various mashing techniques, a description of the underlying biochemistry, and a step-by-step description of the mashing process. By compartmentalizing the information into short chapters and carefully organizing their sequence, Miller creates a guide that can be read straight through as an initiation to advanced brewing or easily referenced for specific information on brew day. --Todd Gehman

Detailed, but repetitive
By Glen Martin
This book contains a lot of good info, which I've found to be both interesting and useful as I get back into brewing after a break of a few years. I have Papazian also, and of the two books, I pick this one up more often, and find what I'm looking for more easily.
Despite the comments of some other reviewers, one doesn't need to be an all-grain brewer to find this book useful. I'm creating my own recipes using extracts and specialty grains, and find this book to be very helpful.
However, Miller is pretty repetitive. It is only a slight exaggeration that there are 3 chapters on each topic: on each on theory, equipment and method. I find that there is a moderate degree of repetition of material across these chapters. A consolidation of each topic into 1 chapter could well result in a 1/3 reduction in pages for the book.
I'll echo another reviewer, who commented negatively on the recipes towards the back. They are really just lists of ingredients, without discussion on method (eg. mash temperatures) or variables.
Having made these mild complaints, I'll go on picking this book up every day or so as I think about what to do for my next brew.

Good Read, But lacked Good Organization

A very informative book. However, the information presented was not organized in an easy-to-skim format. It does present lots of useful information and I would recommend it for anyone interested in homebrewing.

Nice but mostly useless
By Hiro78
Buy this book if you want to have another beer book to read or you are an advanced brewer who whats to learn more about chemistry. Don't buy it if you want to get useful informations on how to actually "do things". He talks a lot about the general aspects of brewing but without giving you any practical advice or formulas.
This book definitely aims to the advanced home brewers who really already know what they are doing and specially the equipment section and recipe section might scare the beginner away.
