Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas, by Natasha Dow Schüll

Recent decades have seen a dramatic shift away from social forms of gambling played around roulette wheels and card tables to solitary gambling at electronic terminals. Slot machines, revamped by ever more compelling digital and video technology, have unseated traditional casino games as the gambling industry's revenue mainstay. Addiction by Design takes readers into the intriguing world of machine gambling, an increasingly popular and absorbing form of play that blurs the line between human and machine, compulsion and control, risk and reward.

Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll shows how the mechanical rhythm of electronic gambling pulls players into a trancelike state they call the "machine zone," in which daily worries, social demands, and even bodily awareness fade away. Once in the zone, gambling addicts play not to win but simply to keep playing, for as long as possible--even at the cost of physical and economic exhaustion. In continuous machine play, gamblers seek to lose themselves while the gambling industry seeks profit. Schüll describes the strategic calculations behind game algorithms and machine ergonomics, casino architecture and "ambience management," player tracking and cash access systems--all designed to meet the market's desire for maximum "time on device." Her account moves from casino floors into gamblers' everyday lives, from gambling industry conventions and Gamblers Anonymous meetings to regulatory debates over whether addiction to gambling machines stems from the consumer, the product, or the interplay between the two.

Addiction by Design is a compelling inquiry into the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance, offering clues to some of the broader anxieties and predicaments of contemporary life. At stake in Schüll's account of the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance is a blurring of the line between design and experience, profit and loss, control and compulsion.

Review
Winner of the 2013 Sharon Stephens First Book Prize, American Ethnological Society

Honorable Mention for the 2013 Gregory Bateson Prize, The Society for Cultural Anthropology

The Atlantic Editors' "The Best Book I Read This Year" for 2013, chosen by senior editor Alexis C. Madrigal

"Natasha Dow Schüll, an anthropologist at MIT, has written a timely book. Ms Schüll has spent two decades studying the boom in casino gambling: the layout of its properties, the addicts and problem gamblers who account for roughly half its revenue in some places, and the engineering that goes into its most sophisticated products. Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas reads like a combination of Scientific American's number puzzles and the 'blue Book' of Alcoholics Anonymous."--Christopher Caldwell, Financial Times

"Addiction by Design is a nonfiction page-turner. A richly detailed account of the particulars of video gaming addiction, worth reading for the excellence of the ethnographic narrative alone, it is also an empirically rigorous examination of users, designers, and objects that deepens practical and philosophical questions about the capacities of players interacting with machines designed to entrance them."--Laura Norén, PublicBooks

"Schüll adds greatly to the scholarly literature on problem gambling with this well-written book. . . . Applying an anthropological perspective, the author focuses especially on the Las Vegas gambling industry, seeing many of today's avid machine gamblers as less preoccupied with winning than with maintaining themselves in the game, playing for as long as possible, and entering into a trance-like state of being, totally enmeshed psychologically into gaming and totally removed from the ordinary obligations of everyday life. . . . The book offers a most compelling and vivid picture of this world."--Choice

"If books can be tools, Addiction by Design is one of the foundational artifacts for understanding the digital age--a lever, perhaps, to pry ourselves from the grasp of the coercive loops that now surround us."--Alexis Madrigal, The Atlantic

"Natasha Schull's Addiction By Design is fascinating, absorbing, and at times, a bit frightening. . . . Schull's work will have wide relevance to many audiences, including those interested in technology studies, media studies, software studies, game studies, values-in-design, and the psychology and sociology of addiction and other technologically mediated behavioral disorders."--Hansen Hsu, Social Studies of Science

"Original, ambitious, and written with elegant lucidity, Addiction by Design presents us with a narrative that is as compulsive as the behavior it describes. The book repositions debates in the field of gambling and will surely become a classic text in studies of society and technology."--Gerda Reith, American Journal of Sociology

"Based on fifteen years of ethnographic work, Addiction by Design is an ambitious and thought-provoking book that challenges the neoliberal ethos currently governing the way in which governments and professionals think about gambling addiction."--Kah-Wee Lee, Technology and Culture

"A handbook on regaining our proper orientation to the world. Schüll's book offers a grim warning about the ways others can deliberately cut us off from natural and supernatural joys."--Leah Libresco, Commonweal

From the Back Cover

"A stunning portrayal of technology and the inner life. Searing, sobering, compelling: this is important, first-rate, accessible scholarship that should galvanize public conversation."--Sherry Turkle, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, author of Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other

"A fascinating, frightening window into the world of gambling in Las Vegas and the technological innovations that deliberately enhance and sustain the 'zone'--the odd, absorbed state for which extreme machine gamblers yearn. An astute and provocative look at addiction and its complex moral, social, and emotional entanglements."--T. M. Luhrmann, Stanford University

"At the heart of Schüll's book is the interplay between the players and the machine; between the players and the machine manufacturers; between the players and the math program; and between the players and the 'zone' that the machines help produce. A tour de force that changes the dialogue on gambling addiction."--Henry Lesieur, author of The Chase: Career of the Compulsive Gambler

"Schüll's clear and dramatic writing style is itself addictive. One is drawn into the ways in which the interactions among the different stakeholders lead to players' experience of being drawn into a 'zone' where they remain until all resources are gone. This is a must-read narrative that points to the many variants of screen addiction possible today."--Don Ihde, author of Bodies in Technology

"This gripping, insightful, and poignant analysis of machine gambling offers a kind of object lesson in the intensified forms of consumption that computer-based technologies enable. An exemplary case of the way in which close, critical investigation of specific sites of capitalism can provide a deeper understanding of both intimate experience and widespread socioeconomic arrangements."--Lucy A. Suchman, author of Human-Machine Reconfigurations

"Schüll offers a provocative and important study of the imperative some people feel to lose themselves in a machine. The ethnography is rich and deep, shedding original light on the significance of addiction and gambling in American culture. The story told in the book is absolutely riveting."--Emily Martin, author of Bipolar Expeditions

"In the zone" or "zoned out"?
By Brenda Jubin
Natasha Dow Schüll's Addiction by Design is one of the most compelling books I've read in the past few years. Not because I was ever captivated by slot machines or video poker. In my entire life I lost a total of $5 to a slot machine and, quite frankly, even then I didn't consider the experience worth anywhere close to $5. But the experience has changed, thanks to technology and mathematical algorithms; it has a deeper hook.

Schüll, an associate professor at MIT, argues that addiction to machine gambling stems from the interplay between the gambler and the machine. Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas and extensive interviews with both designers and addicts, she shows how the "duty to extract as much money" as possible from customers and the desire to play for as long as possible combine to produce a recipe for potential addiction.

Slot machines have come a long way from the coin-fed mechanical one-armed bandits. They now use video technology, which speeds up play significantly. On average, pulling a handle resulted in 300 games an hour. Video poker players can complete 900 to 1,200 hands an hour; the rate is similar on video slots. (p. 55) The financial flow in casinos has also sped up. Players no longer have to carry around heavy cups of coins or wait for payouts. Instead, casinos are "cashless." Moreover, players who run out of money can easily tap into their checking accounts, credit cards, or debit cards--in numerous jurisdictions right from their machines--to keep on going.

Early on programmers devised techniques "not only to distort players' perception of games' odds but also to distort their perception of losses, by creating `near miss' effects. Through a technique known as `clustering,' game designers map a disproportionate number of virtual reel stops to blanks directly adjacent to winning symbols on the physical reels, so that when these blanks show up on the central payline, winning symbols appear above and below them far more often than by chance alone." (p. 92)

Increasingly, mathematicians are designing games that match "math with markets, player types with schedule types." (p. 109) There are two basic types of players--jackpot players who prefer "high volatility, low hit frequency" games and escape players (play-to-win-to-play players) who prefer "low volatility, high hit frequency" games. "On both machines you end up in the same place, which is zero. ... It just takes longer to get there on the second one." (p. 111)

The gamblers that Schüll interviewed were escape players. As a casino executive said, "What they really want to do ... is to play and forget and lose themselves. ... [They want to] get in the zone" where "their own actions become indistinguishable from the functioning of the machine." (pp. 170-71) This zone is not a happy place. Unlike Csikszentmihalyi's flow, which is "life affirming, restorative, and enriching, ... repeat machine gamblers ... experience a flow that is depleting, entrapping, and associated with a loss of autonomy." (p. 167) It is decidedly worse than T. S. Eliot's melodramatic description of playing solitaire as "the nearest thing to being dead."

Schüll's book is masterfully crafted; it "hooks" you to keep reading until there is nothing left to read. You come away, however, enriched, not depleted. The interviews are gripping, the analysis is sophisticated, and the topic is important--not least because we are all being bombarded with technology that enables us to be "in the zone" in a host of deleterious ways.

Interesting information, but works better as a dissertation than a book.
By J. C. Stroissnig
I have no idea what to rate this book because one, I can't finish it, and two, my beef isn't with the contents per se.

I'm shocked that this book received nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews. Must've all been by academics. I'm trying, for probably the 5th time, to read some of this book and I just can't focus. It's written like a thesis paper. It reads like a thesaurus exploded all over a psych degree to impress an english professor. I was excited to get this book after hearing an interview on a radio program about it. I am researching design manipulation (for practical reasons, not academic) and this was absolutely perfectly the type of thing I was looking for.

The concepts are simple enough, and quite fascinating, but the writing is just awful. I'm not normally one to be so blunt (nor mean), but I can't help it, mostly because I'm shocked that I seem to be the lone voice. Here is a very typical example of the writing:
"To ignore the continuum of problematic experience among gamblers is to minimize the extent of the phenomenon, they suggest. Departing from the dominant medical emphasis on the psychological, genetic, and neurophysiological factors that might predispose an isolated subset of individuals to "maladaptive gambling behaviour," they seek to understand how commercial gambling activities and environments might create the conditions for - and even encourage - such behaviour in consumers."

I literally just turned to a random page and wrote down the first thing I saw. Do I understand every word in those two sentences? Sure do. Do I understand what the author is trying to say here? Sure do. Is it enjoyable to read in the slightest? Sure isn't. It reads like a dry textbook as opposed to a book you read out of want. It's extraordinarily clinical. Yes, it's supposed to be a book about findings, not opinions. That's no excuse. You can write about facts and findings in a far more enjoyable, warm, readable way. This book screams 'academia'. For scholars, by scholars. I haven't been in a scholarly environment in 20 years, and nobody I encounter (or have ever encountered) speaks like this so I have to actually "think" about what I'm reading as opposed to just reading and absorbing. If your first reaction to that is "If you have to "think" to understand these words, then maybe you're not smart enough to 'get' this book" then this review isn't for you. It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of familiarity. Unless you're in this niche world where people communicate like this, it won't be a natural read. You'll find yourself reading the same sentence 3 or 4 times. Not because you don't know what the words mean, but because your brain quickly glazes over and you can't focus.

great book on machine-human interaction
By Rebecca L. Tushnet
The best book on the techno-human intersection I've read in a long time, and also highly depressing. If you've read Temple Grandin on humanely getting cattle through the slaughtering chutes, you might recognize the same spirit in this depiction of best practices for casino design: "`passageways should keep twisting and turning through gradual, gentle curves and angles that smooth out the shifts in direction.' Aisles leading into gambling areas `should narrow gradually, so walkers do not notice the approaching transition until they suddenly find themselves immersed in the intimate worlds of gambling action.'" The games themselves are designed to create a false sense of efficacy in the gambler--players who feel they can have an effect on outcomes will keep playing longer. And they are designed to create a false sense of the odds of winning and the magnitude of wins: reels are programmed so that there are fewer opportunities to win than it looks like there should be based on the number of symbols on the reel; reels are programmed to stop so that it often looks like there was a near miss (and regulators ignored the deceptive potential, because it was good for the industry); "teaser" reels display before you play with more winning combnations than actually available; and then payoffs less than the original bet are rewarded with "winner!" notifications, creating "a sense of winning" and allowing people to play longer and more smoothly as their money drops to zero. It was pretty chilling to read that the most recent "subtle yet radical innovation is precisely [new machines'] capacity to make losses appear to gamblers as wins, such that players experience the reinforcement of winning even as they steadily lose." Gamblers "collude in the delusion," turning off their rational knowledge as they play to what's known as "extinction." They play to play, not to win, seeking a zone of nonbeing/noninteraction with the human world.

Casinos then collect information about each player, tracking to make sure they're losing on target and offering coupons, meals, etc. at the moment that the gambler might decide to cut her losses and leave. Now technology allows this to be done in real time: customer reps carry devices that indicate when a consumer at one of the machines is reaching a pain point and needs a boost to keep playing. The casinos are removing the emotion and guesswork; the gamblers are living in it, creating a "profound imbalance" between the parties' abilities to know and understand each other, and change in response to the other's actions.

Schüll situates this in the context of a modern economy that demands ever more surveillance and control of the self from each worker: "individuals must be extremely autonomous, highly rational, and ever-alert masters of themselves and their decisions; constant contingency management is the task." Gambling is both an escape from this constant choice-making and a retreat into it, distilling choice into something simple and smooth. Schüll's player informants, mostly problem gamblers, repeatedly state that they don't want human contact; she suggests that gambling takes them away from painful demands and painful absences, reducing uncertainty if only to the certainty of loss.

When Schüll turns to managing problem gamblers, she finds the same data-driven and choice-based dynamics. Both gambling therapies and casinos are "geared around the idea that behavior can be modified through external modulation; like gambling machines, therapeutic products are designed to be `user-centric' and amenable to custom tailoring." Moreover, both aim to provide a psychic state of balance that insulates people from shocks internal and external. Even consumer protection aims target consumer misperceptions, or target machines that are designed to exploit consumers' rational expectations. However, the machines aren't designed for rational appeal; she describes many of the strategies promoted by the industry as "like trying to talk sense into alcoholics who are passed out." The gambling industry is interested in consumer protection as a way to limit its potential legal liability/additional regulations; locating the "problem" in the gamblers is a way of claiming innocence of their own activities. So the industry advocates concentrating on helping specific people, rather than indirect behavior modification--when its economic foundation is indirect behavior modification, as noted above. Schüll details nascent attempts to create responsible gaming devices that will slow play through "voluntary acts of self-governance," but it's hard to imagine they'll work if nothing else changes, especially since they rely on the same ideology of self-management--indeed, there's some evidence that addicted gamblers use self-monitoring as part of their addictive behavior. It's difficult to "appeal[] to personal responsibility through the very same machine interface that short-circuits personal responsibility in the first place," but it's part of a system that offloads risk and the duty to manage risk onto individuals.

Schüll almost amusingly recounts how casinos started to worry that their careful data collection would be used against them, since they'd be able to see how much of their business came from problem gamblers or people exhibiting addictive behavior (extended play hours, multiple ATM visits, maxing out credit cards, etc.). Would they be liable for tracking players? Or for not doing so? Anonymizing data became a self-protective measure.

The final level of addiction is governmental: casino revenues are so attractive that governments find the temptation too hard to refuse. "Some have gone so far as to enumerate the classic defense mechanisms of addiction by which industry stakeholders, caught in the maximizing momentum of a drive for revenues, rationalize their actions: `blaming others, belittling contrary viewpoints, disavowing responsibility for negative outcomes, preferring to avoid conflict, and not tolerating straight talk, honesty, or directness.'" Schüll is great at expanding focus from the individual gambler (where the industry wants us to look) to the larger structures interacting. Collective action and inaction got us here; the question is whether, going forward, the collective that does the shaping will be the corporation or the people.

This book is just o-kay. I took the first semester of two with this book (Kelly "cannonball" Cannon was the instructer ). You will still have to buy another book to learn what you will need to know for the test. The book covers tpoics that aren't CISCO objectives, and there are many typos. I also bought the book the two books by Todd lammle. They were more in depth, and had there own faults. Good luck

The delisting of stock corporations is still widely unregulated in Germany, notwithstanding the apparent conflict of interests between majority and minority shareholders. Specifically, the existing delisting regulation does not apply to a delisting effected by means of a corporate law transaction such as a merger. This treatise develops a new approach in order to reconcile the conflicting interests. Contrary to the prevailing view, the treatise recognizes a need for the protection of minority shareholders only to the extent that they suffer an actual loss of liquidity as a result of the delisting.

Review

"An essential support text for the traditional design product. ...Well written, it is easy to read and is superbly indexed" --Trans IChemE

"Bottom line: For a holistic view of chemical engineering design, this book provides as much, if not more, than any other book available on the topic. Nearly every subject is accompanied by examples and new technologies are also addressed. In short, a complete, well-written and illustrated resource that is a pleasure to use." --From www.cheresources.com (Chemical Engineering Resources)

"Chemical Engineering Design is a complete text for students of chemical engineering. Written for the senior design course, and also suitable for introduction to chemical engineering courses, it covers the basics of unit operations and the latest aspects of process design, equipment selection, plant and operating economics, safety and loss prevention. It includes detailed worked examples, case studies, end-of-chapter exercises, plus supporting data, spreadsheet calculations and equipment specification sheets for downloading." --Chemical Engineering Progress

"The book was originally written by British chemical engineer Sinnott as Volume Six of the Chemical Engineering series edited by Coulson and Richardson. It was intended as a stand-alone design textbook for undergraduate design projects that would supplement the other volumes, so it was no long stretch to publish it separately in 2008. Towler (chemical engineering, Northwestern U., Illinois) helped update and revise it, and integrated US laws, codes, and standards into it. This second edition takes account of comments about strengths and weaknesses by students and instructors. It also is rearranged to fit a typical two-course senior design sequence better, focusing first on process design then on plant design." --Reference and Research Book News, Inc.

A Great Process Design Reference
By Bradley Yaniga
It can be helpful to know the background of the person leaving the review: I obtained both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Toledo, and for the last three years, I have worked both as a process and process control engineer in industry (2007-2010). Before I purchased a process control book, I did much research and I know now that I made the right decision. Whether you are student who is trying to learn process design for the first time or if you are already in your career (academia or industry), this is a book that compiles much information in one place. The chemical engineering student, as well as the process engineer in industry, would benefit from this wealth of information pertaining to the design of unit operations equipment. Now I use this as reference material for potential, future capital projects at work.

An articulate systematic guide to Chemical Engineering Design, Practice, and Plant Economics
By Didaskalex
*****
"The art and practice of design cannot be learned from books. The intuition and judgement necessary to apply theory to practice will come only from practical experience." --Ray Sinnott, Ch. Engineer, Manual Co-author
*

This articulate systematic guide to Chemical Engineering Design introduces the subject of a graduate level study of the process design principles, practice and plant economics, and serves as a hand book for Chemical project Engineers. The expert authors come from UOP, pioneering licensors of oil and gas (catalytic) processes, and Chemical manufacturer Dupont, who eloquently explore hands on experience in design, and evaluation of CPI/HPI projects. Their approach is in two parts, Process Design: the software, and Plant Design, projecting in detail the hardware selection, design and specification, a mere 1300 pages, in twenty chapters.

In Part I, Process Design unfolds as the 'engineering package, set by owners to engineering contractors, in a call for tenders. This covers the design basis, and the project structure Flow chart, and describes the design documents. Starting with PF development to a P&I D as the main detailed piping and instrument diagram. two main roots are discussed, the grass roots and modification of existing units (Revamp), PFD review slightly different, in both cases. Process reviews are discussed on all levels. Chapter 3 discusses utilities and energy management/ recovery. Process Simulation follows covering programs, physical properties, and optimization.

Chapter 5 cover Process control, starting from P&I D, describing Alarms, Safety trips & interlocks, and computer control systems (initiated in the 70's, with problms and references. Chapter 6 covers materials of construction, mechanical properties to types of corrosion, with a nice tip on corrosion charts, and different used alloys and plastics. Ch. 7-9 cover capital cost estimates, revenue, and production cost, economic evaluation of projects follows. Ch. 10-12 discuss safety & loss prevention, site selection, and design optimization. These last three chapters can form in fact be an integral part of Plant Design.

Plant Design, as Part II, considers equipment and (rotating) machinery, stressing selection and specs with process and mechanical internals design of pressure vessels, underlining Codes & standards. Reactors include reaction systems, catalysts and R internals. Separation columns: distillation, Absorption & extraction, Plate and packed internals well covered, concisely but clearly. Solid handling is reviewed in Ch. 18: particle size, mixing, and separation from liquids & gases. Fluidization, conveying and cyclone separators are covered, amended with fines as hazards in solid processing .

Heat transfer equipment, the backbone of plants, is articulated with a complete application list of Heat exchangers, finned air coolers, condensers design are explained with calculations. Fired heaters, and reboilers are combined with two phase flow, and boiling regime description. Kern design method and pressure drop, a nostalgic HE practice, are included. Ch. 20 on Fluid transport and storage, covers pressure drop in pipes, valves for single and two phase fluids. Pumps and compressors design, system curve, selection & performance curves are provided, with numerical examples, drivers and accessory description, and control valve sizing.

The authors hands on experience in process and project management is crystal clear. System approach is always considered including those of steam, relief, and other minor systems. API codes, and AIChE good practices, Safety codes, process review audits, and numerous project procedures were enumerated and clarified. Appendices cover corrosion Charts, physical properties data base, with problem statements in project design definition forms. It was hard for me to find any missing plant equipment, even a propriety one, coalescers are missed! I was wrong; they are briefly described (pp. 778) It has been delightful to review this fine guide.

Useful
By J. Ruben
I'm using this book for my Chemical Engineering Process Design I and II classes. It has been very useful for assignments, and is relatively easy to read, although economics stuff is sometimes a bit dry. The examples are good, and the supplemental material online has also been very good. It is a good book, with some useful review of heat transfer, and fundamental chemical engineering principles.

A Mickey Mouse ReaderFrom University Press of Mississippi

Ranging from the playful, to the fact-filled, and to the thoughtful, this collection tracks the fortunes of Walt Disney’s flagship character. From the first full-fledged review of his screen debut in November 1928 to the present day, Mickey Mouse has won millions of fans and charmed even the harshest of critics. Almost half of the eighty-one texts in A Mickey Mouse Reader document the Mouse’s rise to glory from that first cartoon, Steamboat Willie, through his seventh year when his first color animation, The Band Concert, was released. They include two important early critiques, one by the American culture critic Gilbert Seldes and one by the famed English novelist E. M. Forster.

Articles and essays chronicle the continued rise of Mickey Mouse to the rank of true icon. He remains arguably the most vivid graphic expression to date of key traits of the American character―pluck, cheerfulness, innocence, energy, and fidelity to family and friends. Among press reports in the book is one from June 1944 that puts to rest the urban legend that “Mickey Mouse” was a password or code word on D-Day. It was, however, the password for a major pre-invasion briefing.

Other items illuminate the origins of “Mickey Mouse” as a term for things deemed petty or unsophisticated. One piece explains how Walt and brother Roy Disney, almost single-handedly, invented the strategy of corporate synergy by tagging sales of Mickey Mouse toys and goods to the release of Mickey’s latest cartoons shorts. In two especially interesting essays, Maurice Sendak and John Updike look back over the years and give their personal reflections on the character they loved as boys growing up in the 1930s.

Review

“This book does a good job curating particularly significant pieces about the Mouse–from such noted writers as John Canemaker, John Culhane, E. M. Forster, John Updike, M. Thomas Inge, Charles Solomon and our own Jim Korkis, among many others.

The highlights for me are reading the older pieces–with such noted authors as Irving Wallace or a screenwriter like Frank S. Nugent discussing the evolution of Mickey Mouse in the 1940s–written at a time when the maturing studio was still in a “golden age.” And there is also some real meat here–Arthur Mann’s 1934 article for Harper’s Magazine on Disney’s finances and distribution is a real find.

Just when you think you’ve read it all, A Mickey Mouse Reader will indeed add to your knowledge of the Disney studio and its most famous creation. This is a good one, and I recommend it.”

―Jerry Beck, Cartoon Research (9/10/14)

“In his introduction to A Mickey Mouse Reader, editor Garry Apgar advises readers to enjoy the book’s segments at random, but I didn't follow his suggestions. I found this much more fascinating to read all the way through.

As someone who rarely lets a quality Disney book or research work go by without devouring it, I found it more fun and interesting to see how the Mickey Mouse phenomenon grew from hot new fad to artistic triumph to passé to dismissible to artistic and important over the decades.

Having read many works that have excerpted selections from many of these essays, it was nice to read them in context, because it really drives home the cultural dynamism of Mickey Mouse and the Disney empire, as well as its effect on those who lived through the various eras. Apgar created a fine assemblage of writings that are a good reference for enthusiasts and perhaps an eye-opener for those who can’t understand all the fuss about Mickey.”

―Greg Ehrbar, Blog Tracks (10/31/14); co-author (with Tim Hollis) of Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records

“My dad referred to Mickey Mouse as ‘a little creature dedicated to the purposes of laughter.’ He also advised us to remember that ‘It all started with a mouse’ . . . the empire that resulted that bears his name. Mickey means different things to different people, and Garry Apgar has compiled a fascinating selection of essays on The Mouse by some very important people. On Mickey’s behalf, I am very impressed.”

―Diane Disney Miller (1933–2013) was president of the Walt Disney Family Foundation and co-founder of The Walt Disney Family Museum

“A Mickey Mouse Reader is a book that commands attention for many reasons, but not least because it is a continually surprising pleasure to read. There is in the book much that is worth reading for its own sake, and not just as a record of how critical and public sentiment have changed in the more than three-quarters of a century since Mickey’s debut. Apgar’s own commentary gives the book a reassuring “spine” of informed judgment; that is, his authorial persona―especially his sophistication as a scholar in the visual arts―encourages the reader to accept his choices of what to include in the book. He has taken seriously the job of choosing the contents and as a result has come up with many fascinating items, including some originally published in other languages, that a less industrious compiler would have missed.”

―Michael Barrier, author of The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney

“A Mickey Mouse Reader is a seminal book which will delight both casual Mickey Mouse enthusiasts and Disney history scholars. Thanks to Garry Apgar, no serious research about Mickey will ever be undertaken from this day forward without first absorbing the fascinating content of this delightful book.”

―Didier Ghez, author of Disney’s Grand Tour and editor of the Walt’s People book series

Entertaining, Enlightening Insights into a Cultural Icon and Economic Powerhouse
By S. O. Higgins
Mickey Mouse celebrated his 86th birthday in November 2014. His image is now found more often on merchandise than on movie and television screens, but his greatest performances continue to entertain us. Moreover, Mickey and the company built around him continue to influence world culture in ways that were inconceivable when he first attained public awareness in 1928’s “Steamboat Willie,” the first animated sound film.
For readers who, like me, first became aware of Mickey Mouse a few years after he made his final appearance as a lead “actor” on the big screen in 1953, Garry Apgar’s astutely chosen collection of news articles and essays on Mickey’s astonishing career is enlightening, comprehensive and thought-provoking. It is also fun to read.
Apgar’s selections cover Mickey’s role in advancing film technology and the quality of animated film, raising Depression-era spirits, saving bankrupt companies (toy train-maker Lionel and watchmaker Waterbury/Ingersoll), beating the Nazis, and building the hugely successful multimedia, real estate, and merchandising powerhouse that is The Walt Disney Company.
Much of the information in “A Mickey Mouse Reader “ will be of special interest to Baby Boomers who as children were proud members of the televised Mickey Mouse Club of the 1950s, but who later became bored or disillusioned by The Mouse. For them, Mickey--whose image was emblazoned on planes and combat vehicles during World War II as a symbol of American Idealism — became their special friend (“Why? Because we — i.e., Mickey and his Mouseketeer friends — like you!”). However, as they grew up and faced the issues rocking the country in the 1960s and 1970s, Mickey became for many a representative of commerce gone wild and a spokesman for cultural imperialism. Apgar’s collection clearly shows that, whatever Mickey has been (or not) over the years, representatives of varying political viewpoints, both in America and elsewhere, have attempted to co-opt The Mouse for their own purposes.
If, of course, you have no interest in cinema, no interest in animation, no interest in the nature of entrepreneurship, or in the making of cultural icons, you’ll find little of interest here. Likewise, if you are incurious as to the roles Mickey Mouse has played as a favorite of royalty, as a D-Day-related code word, and a persona of interest to writers as varied as Anna Quindlen, Walter Benjamin, Irving Wallace, E. M. Forster, James Michener, John Updike, artists Diego Rivera and Maurice Sendak, scientist Stephen J. Gould and Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt … well, this book is not for you.
For those, however, who have some of these interests, “A Mickey Mouse Reader” is a surprisingly informative book, well worth the time spent with it. The volume clearly demonstrates that one cannot be dismissive of The Mouse as a cultural signifier; and, Mickey must be reckoned with as the wellspring of the Disney company’s economic savvy, its creative processes, and its zealous protection of its intellectual property.
The book would benefit from having illustrations but it is, after all, a “reader,” not an art book. (Ideally, Apgar’s forthcoming volume dealing with Mickey as an American icon will provide appropriate balance, showing interpretations of Mickey by major visual artists). The book’s intellectual authority is aided by a comprehensive bibliography, capsule biographies of the essays’ authors, and the inclusion of both translations and reprints of essays originally published in German, French and Spanish.
Apgar has organized his selections chronologically, which enables his readers to discover for themselves the evolution of the Mickey (and Disney) story. Every article is reprinted in its entirety, resulting in the inclusion of passages that may strike some readers as repetitive. However, readers aware of how the sausage of media news is made, will find this “repetition” revealing: It demonstrates the degree to which reporters and essayists writing in the same timeframe drew upon skillfully managed interviews and “background kits” that were legitimately, but most certainly, orchestrated and provided by Disney publicists. The use of original articles in their entirety also tacitly demonstrates the way legends are built, myths created and errors perpetuated (or, less often, revised and corrected) as one generation of writers draws upon work from a preceding one.
Several articles in the anthology — notably those by Arthur Mann, Frank Nugent and L. H. Robbins deal in whole or part with the economic clout of The Mouse. (Walt Disney himself often referred to Mickey as The Mouse). The Disney Studio, particularly in its early days (it existed before Mickey, but it was Mickey that launched it as an entertainment powerhouse in 1928), derived more income from merchandising of Mickey products than from his films. (As “Mickey marketing” declined, those revenues were bolstered by licensing and sales of other Disney character images: Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and major characters like those in the recent Disney blockbuster, “Frozen”). Frank Nugent writing in 1947, notes that Disney’s total revenue (much of it from merchandising and licensing of characters, mostly from Mickey), totaled about $100 million annually at the time, or about $1.65 billion in 2014 money. Of course, this was before Disney expanded into theme parks, cable, broadcast, live-action cinema and its many contemporary operations, which will give it estimated 2014 revenues in the $84-85 billion range. Today, it employs some 180,000 people worldwide, compared to about 650 when, at age 5, Mickey’s economic muscle first began to attract notice.
The University of Mississippi Press, which has established a strong presence as publisher of books on cartooning and animation, has further strengthened its reputation with the publication of this handsomely designed, built-to-last volume that makes a significant contribution to the field.
By way of disclaimer, I am an acquaintance of the editor (who also wrote the book’s introduction and included reprints of two of his own previously published articles). I did, however, purchase my copy (two, in fact) of this book from amazon.com. I have no connection with the publishing house, nor with The Walt Disney Company.

A book about the Mouse, not the Man
By RuthSophia
I really enjoyed learning a lot about the Mouse thanks to this volume. A truly fascinating history. Unfortunately, many people tend to rehash the things that are already known, as a result, after the first section or two, much of what is said about Mickey feels like a repeat until you get to the last section. If you want to skip over the middle sections of the book I don't think you'd miss much because the important parts of the middle sections are quoted in the last section.

At first I was disappointed that we did hear more about Walt in relation to Snow White or his other creations, but I reminded myself that this is a reader about the Mouse. Other commentary on those would be better and more appropriately served in another volume.

The reason I prefer the first couple and the last sections are because we get the initial critical reaction, as well as a look on how Mickey matured in those first several years, and then we get a relook at Mickey's career, including some new information that had been withheld in earlier articles. Some of the articles get very lengthy and tedious, but most are interesting, and many are short and sweet.

Even though I feel the middle sections are largely repeated information, overall the content of this book and it's wide appeal still make it recommended material with 4 stars.

I received a complimentary ebook in exchange for my honest review.

Defining the Mouse
By M. Sonntag
Mickey Mouse was born in 1928 out of economic desperation and went on to far exceeded the humble dreams of his creator Walt Disney. Mickey put Walt on the map and allowed him to fulfill his potential has a creative and entrepreneurial genius.

Mickey is more than a cartoon star, he's a cultural icon who remains the corporate identity of the studio he made famous. Although there were Disney cartoons before Mickey, Walt was certainly on the mark when he said "It all started with a mouse." Quite frankly, with Mickey's success it did.

But what made Mickey so special? What's his story? What is the appeal? Writers since day one have asked that question, Walt himself often seemed to struggle to define his greatest breakthrough. Garry Apgar opens up the vault as it were, on the discussion.

In A MICKEY MOUSE READER you will hear from Walt Disney himself to contemporary journalists, artists and historians about Mickey's appeal, his history and his future. You will journey through time and very literally witness the cultural evolution of the greatest cartoon star of all time. It's an entertaining journey, one to savor.
