Built to Last became an instant business classic. This audio abridgement is read by the authors, who alternate chapters. Collins is a bit breathlessly enthusiastic, but clear and interesting; Porras, unfortunately, is poorly inflected and wooden. They set out to determine what's special about "visionary" companies--the Disneys, Wal-Marts, and Mercks, companies at the very top of their game that have demonstrated longevity and great brand image. The authors compare 18 "visionary" picks to a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, and so on.

A central myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies start with a great product and are pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. Usually false, Collins and Porras find. Much more important, and a much more telling line of demarcation between a wild success like 3M and an also-ran like Norton, is flexibility. 3M had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were not afraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works."

What makes a visionary company? This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. Recommended for all libraries.

[book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

A Must Read for the CEO

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.

Summarizing the basic themes:

* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time
* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible
* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core
* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignment

Unlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

picture a vision for your own unique case harnessed with verified principles...

It is not a how-to book. It is not suggesting receipes for your own case to succeed. Rather it is explaining what visinoary companies did different than control group companies (still remarkably successfull compared to sectoral averages). You need to extract your lessons which suits to your spesific case.
I believe that this a good approach. It acknowledges that your case is unique. It also recognizes yourself as capable and willing to progress, hence inspires you about possible vision. In case you need to be convinced you could follow cases or quotations from the research.
This is another good feature because you have the chance to skip sections that %100 agree with author. It makes you fast to read whole book.
I like the coinciding ideas of visionary companies and TOC literature. You could find marks of Blue Ocean Strategies as well in the book.
I feel energized and motivated to feel "do something, now, I can, no need tobe CEO!"

About to become my "Bible" of nutrition

This review is of the fourth edition of THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK, 2007. There are lots of books in the market about vitamin and mineral supplementation but this one makes a better case than most that Americans, on the whole, should be taking a lot more vitamin and mineral supplements. For one thing, says author/researcher Shari Lieberman, the FDA's RDI's (until recently RDA's) are defensive measures designed to guard against certain diseases but not to enhance health. For instance, the suggested amount of B vitamins we need are calculated to keep beriberi, rickets and pellagra at bay, when many other health benefits accrue by taking more of these substances. For another, those usually minuscule RDI amounts are calculated for an imaginary genderless human being of about 160 lbs, truly a statistical straw person. Worse yet, the quality of the food we Americans eat is steadily eroding under the impact of over-processing, fast food, and soils weakened by generations of chemical (nitrogen-based) fertilizers.

So basically the author dispenses with the "common wisdom" along the lines of "Eat a good balanced diet every day and if you like, take a multivitamin-mineral supplement." Lieberman patiently discusses the role of every vitamin of human use and most of the minerals. This book held a lot of surprises for me. Did you know that Niacin (Vitamin B3) can help lower blood cholesterol? It is even called the "best-kept secret in American medicine," especially when so many people are taking vastly more expensive statins to lower their LDL's. (Many people take both Niacin and statins, and shrug and smile when the doctor credits only the precription drug for any improvement in blood cholesterol.) And men -- before you go to the doctor with complaints of a swollen prostate gland (which may be "BPH", benign prostate hypoplagia), try getting more zinc into your diet.

What I like most about THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK is its intellectually honesty. Lieberman backs up her advocacy by discussing the most recent and relevant studies of vitamins and minerals. Usually her suggested doses of vitamins and minerals are many times the government's straw-man RDI amounts, but really you have to read this book. Someimes the amounts of supplementation for a particular substance is about the same or a little more than the government recommends; and in at least one case I can think of (phosphorus), she recommends no supplementation at all; i.e., nothing compared to the FDA's RDI of a small dose.

So the reader has to pay attention -- gorging on multivitamins, B-complex vitamins and fish oil may do us more harm than good. Also, frequently, the form in which a nutrient gets to us is key. To help reduce cholesterol Vitamin B3 (Niacin) has shown to be helpful, but it needs to be taken in the form of "straight" Niacin, not the Niacinamide that usually winds up in multivitamin or B-complex pills. But ingesting the straight Niacin can lead to a flushing effect -- to counter that, it is necessary to take an aspirin half an hour before taking the straight Niacin (an easy habit for those of us who practice "daily vitamin therapy" of a small aspirin tablet each morning), OR to pay extra for "flush-free" Niacin. This book is packed with such helpful strategies and approaches, which make good common sense and are based on scientific data.

In fact, THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL GUIDE has quickly become my "go-to" book about the benefits of the various nutrients discussed in them (there are also a few herbals the author discusses and approves of). If the recommendations in this book continue to work for me as well as they have for the past several months of implementation, it may well become my "bible" of greater health. Highly recommended. This book has a history of slipping in and out of print, so don't be afraid to go for a good used copy as long as it is fairly recent.

Beware!

I bought this book to round out my knowledge of supplements. I have been taking supplements for 15 years based on the advice of my dietician and have purchased many books on the topic in the interim (my favourite that of Phyllis Balch's).

This book frightened me. The author did not inform the readers in her book about the side effects of the supplements. I found this irresponsible. For example, I was surprised that she did not mention that too much vitamin A causes overt psychosis, liver damage and even death (the reason that the Inuit who traditionally ate bear meat never ate its liver, a fact corroborated decades ago by science), that too much vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, that D-Ribose, a substance extracted from mastic, spurs action from the ovaries (Yemenite jews traditionally used it for women's fertility) and should be used with caution by women taking conventional fertility treatments and menopausal women and patients in hospital have gone into toxic shock when mistakenly overdosed with magnesium through the magnesium pump. The assertion that any side effects caused by over-supplementation are reversible by just ceasing supplementation is ludicrous and dangerous! There are just too many examples of lack of full disclosure of side effects to list.

I wanted a book that would round out my knowledge but this book to me felt like a big push to buy, buy, buy supplements. Although Shari Lieberman advocated cancer prevention and treatment through supplementation in this book, she herself died of cancer at age 51. Beware!

I checked it out of the local library first just to see if it fit my informational needs. The book was so full of great information that I wanted to have a copy of my own so I could mark it up as I read it. To my surprise, there was an updated version with more than 80 extra pages. I write on health issues so I will include it as a resource for my readers. Tops on the Copywriter's "must read" list

There are a ton of books available about how to write copy, and you will learn something from just about any of them. But in that vast array of titles, few do what THE ART OF WRITING COPY by Herschell Gordon Lewis does. This book, if studied and closely followed, will keep the copywriter from writing BAD copy.

Lewis meticulously guides the student through the process of things to avoid doing. Whatever grand idea you've come up with, chances are very good, Mr. Lewis has something to say about it in this book.

If you're like me, many times throughout this book, you'll feel as if Lewis is pointing his rather sarcastic finger directly at you as he uncovers mistakes I know I've made in the past, and probably you have too. But that's okay. The whole purpose of reading such books is to study the craft and hone our skills, right? Sometimes it takes someone like Herschell Lewis to point out our mistakes so we don't keep making them.

Usually in a book like this, I can single out one or two chapters as "favorites." Here, not so much. I loved the whole thing from cover to cover. The format is great, leaving ample margin space for note-taking. There are countless examples of good and mostly bad ad examples to illustrate the points covered. Along the way, the pages are laden with tips, rules and in-your-face quips.

I hesitate to even mention chapters 26 & 27, which are composites of the major lessons covered in the preceding 25 chapters. Please, do yourself a favor. Read the book in its entirety and don't get lazy and skip to the back. You'll lose much of the flavor of the lessons.

This is not a book for someone looking for their first volume on copywriting. Read some of the other fine volumes available first. You are invited to check out my profile where you will find my listmania list "freelance commercial writing 101" that details other volumes to start your study. Read the basics first, then treat this one as "second-tier" study. But by all means, definitely do not delve too deeply into the profession without first studying this volume in detail. This is one of the very best copywriting volumes available.

A useful book, though some fat could be trimmed.

This book is an excellent resource for any writer, professional or not. It gives insight into audience, word selection, and proper (his interpretation) style of writing. Learn the conventions so that when it comes down to breaking them, you will do so KNOWING it, instead of accidentally doing so.

That said, the placement of the graphics was odd, almost never fitting on the page in which they are used to illustrate the point and causing more work for the casual reader. Much of his point goes beyond making it and into flogging it.

That said, the book is darn useful, and will continue to be so for a while. It's timely and fashionable.

About the Author

DAN SCHATT is the former Head of Financial Innovations for PayPal, responsible for defining and executing on PayPal's initiatives with the financial services industry. A must-read book for anyone in banking!

This book is indispensable for anyone in the banking industry trying to 'reimagine' how future business models of banks must evolve - and what role new partnerships will play in those business models. In fact, a central theme of the book is that in order to innovate in the new reality of a digitally-centric world, banks must view partnering as a core competency.

The book gives a very comprehensive overview of the key trends and developments shaping the industry today while providing many detailed examples and use cases. Particularly compelling is the fact that the author gives ample space to the views of others to explain in their own words how they see the industry evolving. There is a lot of insight to be garnered from this book!

And all of this gives perfect context to how banks must approach next-generation partnerships to win the hearts and minds of today's customers.

Great listen from Audible! Buying a desk copy too

I listened to this book on Audible. The author's primary focus is consumer banking and how the technology born from the consumer internet (cloud, mobile, big data, and more) are enablers for the innovation we have already seen and sets the stage for the transformation yet to unfold. The book starts with level setting and landscaping, establishing a strong framework for the guidance provided in the latter chapters. The author's guidance is as good as gold, or perhaps even better, large tallies of math-based currency. I highly recommend this book for banks and institutions regulated by The Federal Reserve, fintech startups, any entity in between, or any consumer wondering where your world is heading.

This provides a great overview of the numerous financial technology companies that are disrupting traditional banking models. It's a bit of a "sales pitch" from the author and others featured in the book, all of whom are invested in a fintech, as they're called, but it's definitely worth reading to learn about the possibilities of partnerships between traditional banks and where technology is taking the industry.

Good, short read; solid continuation of the series

The Bronze Key is the third installment for The Magisterium series. It is a powerful addition to the series, and I had been waiting for it and purchased it on the day it came out. With that, keep in mind that this little review is from the point of view of a fan of the series.

This book feels a tad shallow, to be honest. It's writing is light, just a bit too light, and only hints at deeper themes. That's also not a bad thing, because the intended audience is clearly a younger one; perhaps just a few years younger than a Harry Potter audience. It's also terribly short, though that might just be due to the fact that I read through it in one sitting, eating up each page excitedly.

The story, however, is deliciously unique and deliciously interesting. Even as an adult, I find that I love it. This sequel has managed to continue that. A new, intriguing character is introduced-- Anastasia, a mysterious Assembly Mage who seems obsessed with white-- and current characters get more fleshed out. We learn more about Alex, are shocked by criminal acts, feel our trust betrayed, and ultimately follow the story, riveted, because it is interesting.

So it's a good book. I won't go into too much depth, because who needs to read spoilers? But if you've read the first two, and you're fine with the writing being just a bit light (I would personally /love/ this series written with a lot more exposition and depth, but to each their own), then this book will be excellent for you. Particularly if you want to see a bit more of the dynamic for Callum and Aaron, who actually seem to interact more and better in this book than the previous ones.

Short and fun middle grade fantasy read.

This is the third book in the Magisterium series which is planned to have five books in it. This was an excellent continuation of the Magisterium series, I really enjoyed this book a lot. This has been a well done middle grade fantasy series which both me and my 9 year old son enjoy.

We see a lot more of Call and Aaron wielding their Makar talents in this book and learn a lot more about Chaos magic. Call isn’t questioning his evilness quite as much but is still struggling with the idea that he is the soul of an evil mage reborn.

Much of the story is focused on Call, Aaron, and Tamara trying to track down a spy in the school...a spy who may also be a murderer. Some interesting secrets are revealed about Call’s past and Aaron is struggling with what it means to be a Makar.

Overall this is a quick and fun read and I enjoyed it a lot. These characters are fun and engaging and the story takes some unexpected turns throughout. I think fans of middle grade fantasy will enjoy this series a lot. I love the elemental magic in it and how well the writing flows. I am looking forward to see what happens in book four.

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger, still the over all story has kept me engaged and coming back for more. I am starting to take issue with the nature of the books ending unresolved in any reasonable way. I did not really have that problem with the first ones, but this one didn't end. It just dropped you off in the middle of the story like the season end of a tv series. At this point, although I still like the overall story and honestly cannot predict where it is going, I don't want to keep reading books that never end. I also have hesitations in recommending this book for younger students as it is getting very very dark and I am not sure that would be appropriate for their age group. Still, this is the first time the story has "dipped" like this so I am reserving judgement on the whole series until I read the next one.

The Confidence Code

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

It's not a total waste, but not very helpful

I'm suspicious of some of the five star reviews of this book. If you check out their total reviews, for many this is their only review, and for others, they have just 2 or 3 reviews, all 5 star. And they gush a bit too much about this book. I'm having difficulty getting through this book because it's boring. It's mainly stories about wealthy, highly educated women, or celebrities, who expressed at some point that they felt lucky or unworthy, etc. There are other things in the book, and it is enlightening in some respects. But it's not geared toward helpful advice for the average woman. I agree with the several other reviews for this book that say much the same thing as I am saying. It's not a total waste of money, and if the stats apply to you, you may find it more applicable to yourself.

I did find one thing in the book that I am using, which is that women apologize all the time, whether it's justified or not. I've noticed that I do the same, so am trying to alter this. The response has not been great. The problem is, and perhaps the reason why, women appear to lack confidence and apologize, is because the response when they don't do that is not good. The goal is to get certain things, whether it's a job or a raise or congeniality in the office. I believe that women have learned how to win the end game through experience, and that experience has shown that the best way to do this is to APPEAR more subserviant and pleasant than you are. I saw a documentary once about how girl toddlers & boy toddlers are treated differently, and wondered why girls cry more than boys. You could see in the test that when girl toddlers cried in a child pen area, they got picked up more often than the boys did when they cried. So the girls learned that to cry is to get the result desired, and boys learned that crying did them no good. So the accomplished women in this book, for all their assertions that they attribute their success to luck or whatever, actually did achieve what they wanted, using precisely the things that this book is saying not to use.

Maybe the book changes a bit in the second half. If so, I'll update this review. Don't get me wrong...it's interesting. Just not a practical guide for the average American woman.

Zen and the art of confidence

My curiosity was piqued immediately. Do I focus on competence over confidence? And what really is confidence anyway. In "The Confidence Code," written with great insight, openness and a thoughtful and measured approach, the authors demystify the value of confidence in the marketplace and in everyday life and why it is some of us have it and some us don't. Mixing the right levels of science, intrigue, example, humor and humility--they even go as far as personal genetic testing to see how they fare on the confidence scale--the reader has all the available wisdom to "crack" the confidence code and better understand its impact on just about everything we do. Personally, I found myself listening to conversations in a different way--did a woman at my table just say "he was acting just like a woman and apologizing for everything all the time" --and thinking about my own effectiveness at work and with people in general. It was surprising. This is definately a book that will be greatly talked about, learned from and enjoyed. I highly recommend it!
