Best book on international flying I've ever seen.

I am an US-based pilot, writing this review from Libreville, Gabon, Françafrique. This is my first time on African soil and I flew myself here, without the help of a mission planning service. It would be tempting to say that James Albright's International Operations Flight Manual was the reason the trip was uneventful, but the book arrived fairly late the planning cycle. None the less, I speed read most of the book in the week I had it before departing to validate my planning, and there were several items (Create an Oceanic checklist and RVSM Performance Log) I did as a direct result of this review. If you fly for a major airline or the US military, much of the details of international flying are taken care of for you behind the scenes or by standard operating procedure.. If you are flying internationally for a small operation, this book will be invaluable. While much of the content is available on the internet, James took obvious great care in the organization and presentation of the material, which alone makes it worth the purchase price. Is it perfect? No, I have a couple of minor quibbles. I was taught somewhere to highlight the filed route on Jeppesen charts, then highlight and read all of the ball notes during preflight. This has proved to be an invaluable technique, (adapted to modern iPad flying by creating a spreadsheet with comments for each Flight Information Region) and I saw no mention of it. One should carefully review instrument approach minima when flying to out of the way places, and not be reticent to increase them to something comfortable. I wish there was more information about ICAO flight plans, as the coverage is probably not sufficient to fill one out. I think the book would have been stronger with theater specific coverage of South American, Africa, India, and Asia. Lastly, the book is octavo sized (6" x 9-1/2") and fairly thick, making somewhat cumbersome in my kit bag. It perhaps might have been better sized as a thinner quarto or even as a PDF. I say perhaps because the current size is about the size of a Jeppesen binder and that was probably intentional. These are minor critiques, given the complexities and intricacies of international flying, it is impossible to satisfy anyone. Bottom line, this is the best book on international flying I've ever seen.

An easy to read and a must-have resource.

I had the privilege of receiving an advanced copy of James Albright’s latest book – the International Operations Flight Manual. Having thoroughly enjoyed his previous two books, this latest addition did not disappoint. The author - a very experienced military and civilian pilot - is someone with an uncanny ability to decipher the complex and present it in a manner that everyone can understand. Regardless of whether your flying involves domestic or international flight operations this comprehensive and well researched manual is a must-have resource. As a big fan of James and an avid visitor of his excellent website [...] I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the Flight Lessons series.

Awesome reference for international operations

This is an awesome reference for international operations. Much of the information is also available on the author's website, but having it on my shelf has proven invaluable in writing international operations training for my company. I haven't found a better book out there on this subject. It quotes all the ICAO annexes, but each section also includes a narrative written in easy-to-understand, plain english. Great job, Mr. Albright!
