How Calculus Should've Been Taught

Extraordinary book -- it's hard to explain how good/useful this approach is to learning calculus. Unlike the usual "cram and memorise" approach, this book gives you the analogies and intuitions you need to actually *understand* calculus, so that later the formulas and details can actually make sense. 10/10

Indispensable

After learning Euler's Formula from Kalid's indispensable site, BetterExplained.com, I became intrigued by Euler and decided to look into his solution to the Basel Problem. With what I knew at the time, I could understand everything except the expansion of sin(x), which Euler introduces as a lemma. It turns out that this infinite series, originally discovered by Newton, is one of the results of calculus, which I knew nothing about. So I made learning calculus my next project.

I can't say that it was easy, but Kalid made it possible. Kalid is like everyone's personal tutor, answering questions on his site and providing encouragement when needed. His book is a great introduction, but if you're anything like me, you'll also have to refer to other sources. As a primer, the book doesn't get around to explaining the sine series, which is what I set out to understand. His site, however, does a brilliant job of bringing it alive. It's the most dynamic interpretation I have yet to come across, and it shows how calculus developed in ways that not even Newton could foresee.

An enjoyable guide to calculus

One thing that I remember most about this book is the excellent use of illustrations to explain concepts. From the very first chapter, the author seeks to find very accessible ways to explain concepts without obfuscating the fact that this is still a book about math. It's filled with plenty of excellent visuals and concrete examples aimed at helping you have a better understanding of what calculus is. If you're already a straight up Jedi in the world of math, maybe you would find this book remedial, but if you enjoy math and look at calculus as though you aren't really appreciating it for what it is, then this book might help you fully love calculus.

Grade 8-12 Brian Robeson, 13, is the only passenger on a small plane flying him to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The plane drifts off course and finally crashes into a small lake. Miraculously Brian is able to swim free of the plane, arriving on a sandy tree-lined shore with only his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. The novel chronicles in gritty detail Brian's mistakes, setbacks, and small triumphs as, with the help of the hatchet, he manages to survive the 54 days alone in the wilderness. Paulsen effectively shows readers how Brian learns patienceto watch, listen, and think before he actsas he attempts to build a fire, to fish and hunt, and to make his home under a rock overhang safe and comfortable. An epilogue discussing the lasting effects of Brian's stay in the wilderness and his dim chance of survival had winter come upon him before rescue adds credibility to the story. Paulsen tells a fine adventure story, but the sub-plot concerning Brian's preoccupation with his parents' divorce seems a bit forced and detracts from the book. As he did in Dogsong (Bradbury, 1985), Paulsen emphasizes character growth through a careful balancing of specific details of survival with the protagonist's thoughts and emotions. Beware for Younger Readers!

I am a grandmother with small granddaughters, one of whom is a very precocious reader. She is in first grade, and I ordered Hatchet with another book, which she fortunately became interested in. In a fit of boredom, I picked up the book that was left at my house. I was tremendously relieved she had not taken Hatchet to begin it, without the knowledge of me or her parents! I do not think it would have been appropriate for her, at the age of 7. I will be placing it in an unobtrusive location, to wait for her to read when she is a couple years older.

I find it interesting that not a single review I found mentioned at the start, when the pilot of the small aircraft dies mid-flight, the process is very specifically detailed--the odor, the vision of his face as he dies. Additionally, Brian is angry about his mother, and her extra-marital affair--this book is significantly more explicit about adult problems than most children's literature that is written for 3rd and 4th graders. I thought, the Force was with me! I cannot imagine my granddaughter reading this book now. The lesson I learned, is to peruse books I'm not familiar with before I hand them over--I am writing about a little girl whose mother read portions of The Yearling to her at age 5, when she begged and pleaded, and sat attentively throughout! (my daughter said she "edited" as she read the book) For younger readers, I'd advise parental supervision, and discussion of the issues detailed in The Hatchet, if your child is ready for it.

First in an adventure series with great appeal for middle-school

First in an adventure series with great appeal for middle-school, high-school,
and older readers. This is the kind of book that continues in your dreams
once you have put it down. Great for reluctant readers, as well as ESL learning
Gary Paulsen is never consdescending or obviously trying to simplify his
stories. They are simply remarkable at all levels. This would be a great
gift or prize for any boy or girl. Adults seem equally enthusiastic about
this unforgettable book. It does not involve sex, seduction, or ramance,
except the romance of the wild and breathtaking adventure and survival
skills. This story inspires readers to think about our
innate intelligence to survive under difficult circumstances.
A fast-paced, but thoroughly modern Robinson Crusoe adventure.

A great lesson on perseverance

I read this book in elementary school back in 1995-1996. I'm re-reading it and so far it has held up well.

As a kid, this book gave me an appreciation for the outdoors and surviving in the world when the odds are stacked against you. A great lesson on perseverance.

It also instilled an idea in my mind to not take everyday commodities and experiences for granted.

I loved Gary Paulsen's books as a child, and the other Hatchet books in this series are great, too. I just discovered writing this review that there is now a 5th book.

Esta segunda novela del escritor emergente David Camacho le sigue, en calidad, a su primera obra "Los Zapatos Blancos". Es una novela llena de suspenso, de diferentes puntos de vista acerca de los caminos que uno elige en la vida, de personajes que sorprenden, alegran y - en algunos momentos - hasta hacen enojar. Es, además y no menos, un libro de viajes en tren a través de Rusia. Después de haber leído el libro, uno tiene la sensación de haber estado por esos parajes y haber vivido esas experiencias. Recomiendo esta obra, así como recomiendo a su obra anterior. Desde ya me alegro mucho por su tercer libro, que espero no se demore demasiado en ser creado!

Más que un viaje

A Masterly Edition of the Dead Sea Scroll version of the Old Testament

This is probably the most important edition yet for the textual criticism purposes of the Old Testament of the Bible. It presents the hebrew and aramaic (and a few greek) transcriptions of the scrolls and fragments of the Old Testament that survived. It unfortunately does not include all the fragments of the old testament texts, since many of them are too small to have any significant comprehension or analysis or they depart so much from the traditional text, that they are viewed as as nonbiblical. Despite that flaw this is a very affordable edition compared to the other scholarly versions of the Dead Sea Scrolls out there. The only superior edition is the DJD series, but that is probably somewhere between 1000-2000 dollars if you want the complete fragments of the old testament text. whereas this version is not the complete, but it is all the "important" fragments and scrolls of the Old Testament texts that were found in the DSS, and costs only between 100-200 dollars. For someone who cannot afford the DJD edition, this inexpensive edition is extremely valuable and crucial to any true scholar of the Bible.

A great feature in this text is its citation references; it includes extensive comparison to the most important manuscript versions of the Bible, giving however only a very rare attention to versions like the Armenian and Ethiopic texts. in particular, it compares the DSS reading to the Aramaic Targums, the Syriac versions (especially the Peshitta), the primary divisions of the Septuagint, the traditional Masoretic text, the Samaritan version for the Torah, and the Latin Vulgate version. I am a bit critical of some of their reconstructions and I also have to question the accuracy of some of their transcriptions (its likely they sometimes misread the original msnuscripts and noted a difference that simply is not there), but notwithstanding, because of its extensive references to the major versions, this is a highly valuable version, so any errors on the transcribers part should be able to be corrected if the student is diligent and wisely analyses the differences. The majority of their reconstructions are fairly reliable, but a few are questionable; they it should be warned have an uncanny preference for the Masoretic text in their reconstruction of the surrounding portions of text which were not found in the DSS but are presented to help the reader comprehend the context of the fragments found. This preference of the Masoretic text in the reconstructions is incredibly deceptive to the gullible student who gives too much credence to the accuracy and quality of these scholarly works.

Fit For Purpose

This is what the title says - for engineering students. It is not really useful for the practicing aircraft structural analyst. The mathematics presented is considerably more involved than is presented in most other airframe analysis texts, with empahsis on how stress formulae are derived. A bit over the top if all you want is to know how to analyse a practical problem, but ideal for the student who needs to know the foundations of analysis. A little bit annoying how equations are quoted by number, forcing the reader to continuously return to previous chapters.

The 4th edition of this book complete and improve the already good level of the 3rd edition. It is probably one the best book dedicated to the study of the aircraft structures for aerospace engineering student.

No More American Dream- The Poverty Nightmare

These are individual case samples of poverty stricken Americans who have had their hopes, goals, and dreams for a better life smashed to pieces on page 126 Mr. Jerome Greene tells his story "It's been like hell," he says. "It's very hard to see people leave and go to work in the morning and come home every night. It's hard to see people spending money, going out and having fun and you can't. It's very stressing. Greene, about to turn 50, worked for 16 years as an Oracle software developer, most recently at a Pennsylvania company that made electronic components for cars. When he was laid off in June 2008, the recession was just taking hold, and he still had job interviews. By fall, with the economy in free fall, his phone stopped ringing." On page 121 Mr. J.R. Childress shares his experience "He's determined to stay busy, job or no job, for sanity's sake. Maybe he'll help a neighbor. Exercise. Or check out computer blueprints of construction projects around Winston-Salem, N.C., to stay connected to the world where he thrived for three decades. Childress has been laid off twice since late 2009, most recently for 10 months." On page 47 we have "Magdalyn March, 30, of Birmingham, Ala., can relate to those living in extreme poverty. in 2006, she lost a seasonal job at a packing warehouse, split with an abusive boyfriend and was caring for her two children."
On page 39 we have hit the jackpot there are four different people who tell their stories "At a food pantry in a Chicago suburb, a 38-year-old mother of two breaks into tears. She and her husband have been out of work for nearly two years. Their house and car are gone. "It's like there is no way out," says Kris Fallon. She is trapped like so many others, destitute in the midst of America's abundance." Next we have "Bill Ricker, a 74-year-old former repairman and pastor whose home is a dilapidated trailer in rural Maine. He scrapes by with a monthly $1,003 Social Security check." Then "There's Brandi Wells, a single mom in West Virginia, struggling to find a job and care for her 10-month-old son." Last but not least there is "Ken Bargy, 58, had to stop working five years ago because of his health and is now on disability." These are everyday Americans whose country America has given them a swift kick to the curb of poverty.

Great quantification and discussion of subjectivity of class issues

Very boring. Just a bunch of statistics. Gives a great overview of the history of poverty in terms of morality and politics. Contributes to the colorblindness of current social measures. This is a good intro book to poverty.

About the Author
Bahaa E. A. Saleh, PhD, has been Professor and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University since 1994. He is the author of Photoelectron Statistics and is a Fellow of the IEEE and OSA. Saleh is the recipient of the 1999 OSA Esther Hoffman Beller Award for outstanding contributions to optical science and engineering education and the 2004 SPIE BACUS award for his contributions to photomask technology.

Malvin Carl Teich, PhD, is a faculty member at Boston University with joint appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, and Biomedical Engineering. He is also Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science and Applied Physics at Columbia University. Teich is the coauthor of Fractal-Based Point Processes (Wiley), and is a Fellow of the IEEE, APS, OSA, ASA, and AAAS. He is the recipient of the 1969 IEEE Browder J. Thompson Memorial Prize Award, the 1997 IEEE Morris E. Leeds Award, and the Memorial Gold Medal of Palacky University.

This book is great! I have been studying this photonics book for a while now. It presents material in a very conceptual way. I appreciate its simplicity. I find its concepts transparent and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.

The Go-To Reference

Great book! They assigned/suggested this book as a study guide for the preliminary exams in my Ph.D. program, and it has remained my go-to reference ever since. It consists of chapter-length (or longer) treatments of topics that warrant their own textbooks and graduate classes, but they always contain the most essential information, clearly explained.

I have the 1st edition, but it looks like I will now have to order the 2nd edition too. This book is just completely indispensable for students and professionals in the field.

Trivia: Fundamentals of Photonics makes a cameo appearance in "Spiderman 2" during a sequence when Peter Parker is hitting the books.
