A great instruction book for knitters seeking better ways to knit socks that fit.

I would like to thank Story Publishing for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.

‘How to knit socks that fit’ is an interesting book. As a person with big feet and who is a novice knitter I was really looking forward to reading it. As, yes, finding socks that fit is one of those minor banes of my existence. And I was not disappointed with this book. I simply need to get a chance to sit down and have a go!

Sometimes I felt this book perfect for a novice knitter with no sock knitting experience (AKA Me). At other times I felt it expected you to know how to knit socks already and this was just a continuation of that skill. Not in a bad way, and I never truly felt over my head, but some new and novice knitters might. I have the safety net of knitting family members and a spinner’s guild to fall back on if I get stuck in such a book… But as not everyone has such a safety net, I was a little concerned the attitude of ‘you know what I’m talking about’ I sometimes got from this book would put some newbies off.

Add to that I found the layout formatting sometimes a little sloppy – a section would start with the title at the bottom of one page, but the actual section in question all on the next page – and I found myself having to not give ‘How to knit socks that fit’ the full 5 stars. As a document writer myself soppy formatting is a pet peeve of mine and so can be a cruel reviewer when I see it. ;-)

But saying that, I still found the majority of the instructions well written and the book deserving a high score. I really loved the fact the pictures were in black and white so you could focus on the pattern and design and not be influenced by colours. And I loved the overall tone of the book as it reminded me of my spinning guild. A warm and friendly voice chatting away to you helping you work your way through the different methods within the book. This is the strongest connection I got from the book – it was FRIENDLY! It was approachable and therefore readable by any skill level. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

I also loved the details given in the book to help educate the reader and improve their knitting skill. From the types of yarn, needles best to use at the beginning of the book, through to the different types of stiches and how to do them, glossary, abbreviations and suggested reading at the back – it just added to the whole friendly atmosphere generated by this book!

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. But probably only to knitters who know more than just the basics. And also possibly only to those with some experience with knitting socks already. As I’ve said, I’ve not knitted socks before and parts of this book did cause me a bit of confusion. But most of it was something I could really work with.

Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. Big feet and a love of knitting draws me to this friendly and easy (mostly) to follow book. I can see it being added to my Amazon wish list in the near future.

In summary: The title says it all really. This book really is all about ‘How to knit socks that fit’ and something I think any knitter with a desire to knit socks would enjoy. I highly recommend.

Great introduction to knitting socks!

I'm a fairly new knitter, but I knew from the beginning that I wanted to learn to knit socks. I've been looking at several different books, sites etc., but How to Knit Socks that Fit by Donny Druchunas seems perfect for a beginning knitter. Druchunas covers the history of knitting socks, techniques for cuff down, toes up, how to knit with double-pointed needles, two circular needles or using the "magic loop" method. In addition she covers other ways to do the heel, toe, and different ways to vary the cuff. I enjoyed How to Knit Socks that Fit so much, that I will be ordering my own copy to keep for reference.

I received "Knit Socks That Fit", yesterday. I sat down and started reading. I've taken a couple of sock knitting classes, but I still didn't quite understand socks. This book is clearing the cobwebs for me. So EASY to understand!!!! AMAZINGLY CLEAR!!!

The book is excellent. the story line beautifully written

I have just finished the book and wish to comment. The book is excellent. the story line beautifully written. Very exciting and keep me coming back to read more. My main objection is that you have cut the book into 3 parts, part is to hook us with no cost to us, then you asked for 3.99 which I paid because you had me. Now I have paid 2.99 to read the end and find out what will happen to all the people involved. I have paid around 7.00 for a book cut into 3 parts. I don't know why but I feel cheated out of my money. When you come to a price for a product or a deal both parties should feel good about the outcome. I don't feel good about the deal. I feel used because in order to find out anything I must buy a new "book". MJ Haag you have used me for your own greed. If you want $7.00 for your book then you should of asked for $7.00 for your book instead of swindling me out of the money. This is a book not a series.

Fantastic read, totally worth the price!

I was a huge fan of this book and series. I read many of the reviews before I bought the books and while I can see where some of those reviews came from....I really don't agree with them. The majority of negative reviews I saw seemed unsatisfied because the beast was a bit of a dick and they did not follow standard romance memes. Based on the description of the books I would hope that you don't go into them expecting that. As a retelling (or more of an enriching) of the Disney version of the Beauty and the Beast story, this was fantastic. It took a well loved cartoon, fleshed it out and made it adult. There were many adult themes throughout and quite a few scenes that will probably make you feel dirty (but they're supposed to), but there was surprisingly little sex in the books. I've seen concerns about bestiality (its beauty and the beast, what did you expect?) and pedophilia (the girl was 17 I believe and very mature for her age, also...in the time frame it was set in...she would have been considered an adult).. The characters were very well fleshed out while maintaining a certain stereotype to stay within the fairy tail setting and I looooved how Benella (Belle) tamed the beast. Watching them grow together was fantastic.
Now, for some negatives. There were a few parts in the series that I didn't think were as cleanly written as the rest...like the implementation of the curse itself considering the witch's reasons...also Benella's aversion to Alec (the human version of Beast).
Either way, the series is fantastic and worth reading even if you're not looking for dirty stuff like I was. Totally worth the cost.

Excellent!

Holy freaking cow. I devoured the words from star to finish, excitement and...well...everything pushing me forward. I even reread several parts to savor the scenes they painted in my mind. And then I come to the end.

...........

What. The. Hell.

In a totally good way. O.M.G. Why the hell is this story in 3 parts??!! That's just evil! I'm wild for the rest but I have to buy another book to get it. I'm not mad or anything. Just ready to scream. I want instant gratification and instead I'm being teased and toyed with. And, yes, I'm using the sexual innuendoes on purpose.

This series has been brilliant and I have no doubt the final book will be the same. Damn. It's been near impossible to stop reading to do my daily work. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Whole the adult content just got a whole lot steamier, it's still well within bounds. Seduction. Whoa. I need a cold shower and maybe step away and wait to read the final book so I can get some work done.

And bugles caling them from sad shires

In September, the Bodleian Library, Oxford published “Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life” by Jane Potter. Owen (1893-1918) has been the subject of `six recent biographies (not to mention others less recent). With Rupert Brooke, Owen is at the front of the line of the groups known collectively as the “World War I poets.” He is one of 16 World War I poets commemorated with a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey.

Potter’s illustrated history of his life is deceptively simple looking, almost like the kind of biography you might find in a middle school library. But it is carefully crafted, extraordinarily well researched, and engagingly written, drawing upon the extensive correspondence he maintained with his mother, his poetry, and a considerable number of sources and photographs from the English Language Faculty at Oxford.

The oldest of four children, he was the son of a railway clerk who had dreamed of settling in India and a mother who was decidedly evangelical. As he matured, he was undecided (or indecisive) about a profession or line of work, until the war intervened. He also had been writing poetry.

Owen didn’t enlist in the British Army until 1915. In 1917, suffering from what was then called shell shock (and what we today call Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, or PTSD), he was sent to Craiglockhart, a hospital in Scotland specializing in shell shock cases. There he met Siegfried Sassoon, who had been sent to the hospital for a very different reason – to avoid a court-martial for a letter he wrote opposing the war (I posted an article on Sassoon’s The War Poems this week at Tweetspeak Poetry).

The friendship with Sassoon was pivotal for Owen’s poetry. Manuscripts of his poems with Sassoon’s emendations still exist (one is on display at the Imperial War Museum). His poetry changed and grew. It began to be noticed, and published.

Potter walks us through each phase of Owen’s short life, using pictures of childhood, family, friends and the military. Each section includes his poems at the end, adding a poignancy to the text. You look at the pictures of the young, the hope and expectancy in his face, and read his poems, and in a few short pages see a life of promise cut short.

One of his best known poems is this one:

Anthem for Doomed Youth

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
— Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Owen almost survived the war. On Nov. 4, 1918, he was shot and killed by enemy fire alongside a canal. A week later, on Armistice Day, his parents were informed of his death.

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

This book is a full-scale revision of my 1963 monograph, The Psychology of Meaningful Verbal Learning, in the sense that it addresses the major aforementioned and hitherto unmet goals by providing for an expansion, clarification, differentiation, and sharper focusing of the principal psychological variables and processes involved in meaningful learning and retention, i.e., for their interrelationships and interactions leading to the generation of new meanings in the individual learner. The preparation of this new monograph was largely necessitated by the virtual collapse of the neobe­ havioristic theoretical orientation to learning during the previous forty years; and by the meteoric rise in the seventies and beyond of constructivist approaches to learning theory.

Tagore is outstanding!

After learning about Tagore at the Art Institute in Chicago, I decided I had to read his writings. I have fallen in love with his poetry and am so happy that I have this book which allows me to read not only his poetry but his essays, stories, and plays. He's truly the most amazing writer I had never heard of!!

Tagore Deserves So Much Better

Oh boy, what a disappointment! The breadth of this endeavor was oh-so promising. But this volume will set back the reputation of the transcendent, genius poet Rabinadranath Tagore for a decade or two. The authors made the terrible mistake of FORCING Tagore's lines to rhyme in couplets rather than let his imagery flower in all its incomparable majesty. Instead of a display of constant genius we get thousands of rhymes worthy of the worst of high school poetry. For those new to Tagore, go for older volumes of his poetry, prose, and plays. Stay away from this travesty--a total whiff. What were they thinking; trying to show off their own cleverness? Tagore would slap them with a big, colorful, wet flower. Fail.

Easy to read, very interesting

This book was very interesting and easy to read. It starts by explaining the current fad diets and why they are so bad for you. Then explains the Plante Program and how eating certain foods can drastically change your mood, health and overall well-being. I especially liked the info on eating to prevent insomnia and diabetes. This book is good for anyone that would like to get away from using prescription drugs to cure everything and maintain a healthy diet. The book includes many easy, healthy recipes and a list of spices that you should keep in your cupboard. I've recommended this book to my family and friends.

Missed the mark for us

I bought this book as something fun and interactive to do with my husband. I give it two stars because it is something to get you talking and discussing feelings and opinions even if you disagree with the book. That beats just sitting on the couch watching tv. Otherwise though we both felt this book wasn't very revealing and often missed the mark for us entirely. For example, in one question it asks you to describe how you would feel standing in the open door of a flying airplane getting ready to parachute for the first time. In the answer section it says your response indicates how you feel when you are about to have sex with someone for the first time. Okay, how many people wouldn't answer that question with words like nervous anticipation or exhilaration? Both of us did at any rate. Not very revealing. My friend said terrified because she is afraid of heights but she completely rejected the idea that she experiences terror at the prospect of sex. I would imagine alot of people might describe themselves as being fearful of parchuting out of an airplane but not necessarily be quaking with fear in bed.
There were also a lot of questions that seemed to be geared to tapping into your subconcious feelings but for us concrete life experience seemed to skew the results. For instance, in one scenerio you are suppose to be searching for gems and it asks you to describe the size and type of gem you searched for. The answer key says the gem you described is a symbol of your sense of self worth. My husband had described a small not very valuable type of mineral but only because the question brought back happy memories of looking for this on hikes with his father as a child. We both felt that this sort of thing came up rather often for us.

An interesting book for overnite hikes, coffeebreaks and basically any other time you want to get to know someone without having them bust out their life story.

Kooky!

Well.... this book is quite interesting.... there is the good and the bad. First, the good: the scenarios they set up are quite interesting and imaginative. Such as the one about what you would say to a camel that has carried you through an expansive desert or the one about a dark, long stairway leading into a basement where a stranger awaits you. So that's the cool part. Reading the scenarios and deciding what you would do... But, turn the page.. and here's the bad part. The explanations they give for your decisions are let's face it.. ...! You said you thought the long stairway leading into the basement was 20 steps (to make it seem spooky) vs. 5. So the book tells you that that means you've had 20 emotionally scarring problems in your life. That is so not true! I am a very happy person!! I DID NOT have 20 emotional problems in my past. The book goes along like this the whole time. The reasons/explanations they give are ... in my opinion.. But oh well, the scenarios are cool and provide some entertainment.
