About the Author

DR. NOUREDDINE KRICHENE, PHD, earned a doctorate in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has taught Islamic finance at the Global University, INCEIF, in Malaysia, and was an economist with the International Monetary Fund Economist Program from 1986 to 2009. From 2005 to 2007, he was advisor at the Islamic Development Bank of Saudi Arabia. Has everything except Islamic capital markets

Thought it would help in understanding the functional aspects of Islamic financial products but it is simply the replication of Cfa related material and hardly anything to do with Islamic finance. It also tells how to hedge sukkuk investments with conventional derivatives.

It also says conventional equity index futures is halal!

Excellent textbook! very thorough and clear explanation of reinforced concrete theory, analysis and design. I strongly recommend it to professors and students, it is based on ACI 318-14. I adopted it for my Reinforced Concrete Design Course at the University of Illinois at Chicago for Fall 2015 semester.

Beautifully written and informative!

I am always amazed and delighted to purchase a Shalu Sharma book and this interesting, informative book is definitely one to have. As the reader learns about Hinduism, a religion that is at least 4,000 years old and with over 750 million followers, they will find out some incredible facts about a religion that is also a philosophy of life. I loved Saraswati who is a female God of Wisdom, how awesome is that? The Hindu religion is compiled of many Gods and amazing philosophies to make not only an individual's life better but also the lives of those around them. The author did an amazing job describing the facts of not only this amazing religion but in all aspects of the religion and of India and its beautiful temples and celebrations. Readers will find great illustrations and what I found very interesting, the beautifully written legends that are a must read. Shalu Sharma gives readers a look inside Hinduism and India that can't be found elsewhere and the way she writes brings not only the stories of the past alive but gives readers a glimpse into the amazing present of this religion and philosophy that we can all learn from.

Hinduism is known as one of the unique religions in the whole world. This is a really good book on Hinduism. It helped me to learn the primary principles of Hinduism. If you want to know more about the Hindu religion then this is a must read for you.

Fascinating Read

A Truly Fascinating Read. I had never given any thought as to what Hinduism really was, or for that matter what it entailed. I was really impressed with all of the forethought and planning that the author had to have put in to the execution of this book. I have to say that the author addressed several misconceptions which I felt was invaluable. Just as an example; the Swastika. Until I read this book, I had no idea that the swastika is and has always been a symbol of good luck in the Hindu Religion and was long before the Nazi's about ruined the meaning of it. I found that the true meaning of Karma comes from the Hindu Religion as well, and yet it is not so different of what many of us believe here in the United States. I love the fact that the author took the time to explain the many different symbols and what they meant in the colorful illustrations throughout her book. I have always been fascinated by art from other cultures, but I admit that I did not understand much of it until now. I can say that from here on out, when I see a picture or statue of a God or Goddess with four arms and hands, three heads or an elephant head, at least now I will know what it means. When the author began detailing the different festivals in the Spring and Fall, it actually made me want to be there in person to participate; I guess my newest goal in life now is to visit India one day! Great job writing and relaying your story, I really enjoyed reading it.

Two years later, Raiffa answered that question for a generation of academics with his book Decision Analysis, whose argumentAthat decision-making skills can be learned and applied as a discipline of their ownAmade Raiffa deeply influential in management and social science. Raiffa (a former professor at Harvard Business School), his longtime associate Hammond (a professor of management and engineering at the University of Southern California) and Ralph Keeney (The Art and Science of Negotiation) here explain decision-analysis techniques and stratagems for the benefit of nonspecialists. They provide substantial, straightforward explanations of concepts (risk tolerance, sunk costs, desirability curves) that sound arcane but may help readers to buy the right car, choose a mutual fund, decide on a school, or plan a vacation. Unfortunately, the lingo of self-help often substitutes for the jargon of management consulting, as when Raiffa's famous five decision steps become the trendy acronym PrOACT. And the example problems can seem clich?d, two-dimensional or implausible, even when based on fact. Nevertheless, recommendations like "Remember that the value of an incremental change depends on what you start with" and "Make sure your subordinates reflect your organization's risk tolerance in their decisions" are, at the least, good reminders that the logic of decision making is often counterintuitive; at best, they are an important, useful set of insights.

They provide a practical model for decision making and demonstrate that it can be applied in both personal and business situations. They show that the key is to break the decision into its individual elements, identify those that are most important, and analyze potential outcomes. The authors also stress that decisions should be made before they turn into problems. Their so-called PROACTive approach can be broken down mnemonically. Identify the PRoblem, specify the Objectives, create Alternatives, understand the Consequences, and weigh the Trade-offs. Following these steps, one must clarify uncertainty, assess risks, and be aware of what other choices a decision might create. Put this one at the top of your reading list

I had the pleasure of reading this book last year as assigned material in a graduate business course taught by Ralph Keeney. My degree is in information systems management and, frankly, I took Managerial Decision Analysis only because I needed 3 elective credits to graduate. In retrospect, however, the course was among the most beneficial to me and Smart Choices was certainly the most relevant book I read in graduate school. I say it was the most relevant because it demonstrates how to define problems and make decisions not simply as a business leader, but as an individual. The PROACT approach is a valuable tool for making formal decisions like "Which career path should I choose?" or "Which software package should I recommend to my client?" But the mentality that the approach engenders is pervasive. You will find yourself unwittingly applying elements of it to questions like "How should I spend time with my kids this weekend?" or "What is the best Valentine's Day gift for my wife?" The greatest benefit to me has been the piece of mind that comes with knowing that I don't just make better decisions -- I am now a better decision maker.

Excellent summary of a difficult subject

I have read many books on decision analysis - however, the 3 authors managed to condense the most relevant points in one book, without academic speak. The famous Kahnmann & Tversky's Heuristics and Biases are nicely summarised in the final chapter. The case studies are easy to relate to. Definitely a professional book written for the layman. No need for a PhD to understand this!

A useful guide for systematic decision-making

This is an excellent book. The title may make this appear to be one of the too-numerous mass-market books which claim to offer advice on business and personal decision-making but actually offer lots of specific admonitions which are based on values which the reader may not share (example: anything by Steven Covey). This book, however, doesn't try to sell you any of the the authors' values; instead it teaches you an effective process that you can use to analyze any decision-making situation and make the choices which are most effective for achieving your objectives, whatever they may be. The book treats the subject in the same systematic way that it might be treated in an academic decision theory text, only it is written in plain language which can be read quickly and easily comprehended by the general reader. It finishes with a summary outline (they call it a "roadmap") which is a useful quick reference.

Comprehensive, clear, practical

While not written at the level of technical philosophical detail as Aquinas or Pannenberg (as another review here stresses), this text is still set apart from most general theological treatments by its philosophical clarity and coherence. This is in addition to the virtues of its serious treatment of the range of Scriptural data concerning each topic, its apologetic engagement with differing views, and its practical counsel for life and ministry. It is a great resource for thinking through major theological issues and positions. I recommend it highly.

Does Integrative Necessarily Mean Redundant?

Early in their work authors Lewis and Demarest assert the uniqueness of their tri-volume omnibus work. They advocate their approach as a marriage of Biblical Theology and Systematic Theology with the inclusion of a verification step, a doctrinal apologetic, by which competing interpretive options are alternately attacked and defended. At the end of the discourse the preferred stance is theoretically logically self-identifying.

This is at its core an introductory textbook into doctrine and theology. Moreover, due to the authors' chosen distinctive approach, the work tends to be highly repetitive, repeating the same historical elements from one article to the next. While often informative, it has the net result of becoming tedious and dry to read when taken in any large grouping of pages.

Though predominantly written from an apparently reformed and evangelical orthodoxy there are interesting deviations. For example, Lewis and Demarest propose that the earth was populated with pre-Adamic apes for vast eons; ostensibly their goal is to reconcile contemporary geologic findings with historic Christianity. Such an approach raises more questions than they are willing to address in their writings (e.g. Did Adam and Eve already expect to die even before the tree incident since their own parents had died before them? When did death actually enter the world?).

There is much to appreciate in their work, particularly their generous application of varied historical understandings behind traditional doctrinal issues and their apologetics-based method in testing theological theories. On the other hand, there are much deeper and more concise Systematic Theologies which are not in the tedious form of a textbook such as Geisler's, Wayne Grudem's, and Swindoll & Zuck's; all of which I would choose as more useful reference materials over this omnibus effort.

Five Stars only because ten were not offered!!

In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined the impact that words of another person could bestow on my perspective of life. As a professional instructor for over 15 years if I had had this book when I was instructing I would have used it at the start of each session or class, and yes I would have borrowed every word and every line to impress upon every student the message of life and how to accomplish their own goals and find meaning to their time on earth. Even in retirement I plan to put MR MASON 's advice to a more meaningful way of life into my daily routine. This book is not for a select few it is a riveting must read for everyone. I firmly believe that this book has provided a great blueprint towards a fulfilling life. I plan to read it again......and again...and again...I think you get the picture. Well done! AMAZING!
