From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Former New York Times Book Review editor and linguistic expert O'Conner (Words Fail Me, You Send Me) updates her bestselling guide to grammar, an invigorating and entertaining dissection of our ever-evolving language. In this third edition, O'Conner guides readers through conversational conundrums with aplomb, filling in not only the logic behind the appropriate choice for, say, possessives, but also explaining such oddities as the spelling of restaurateur (instead of a "restauranteur"), the proper pronunciation of prix fix ("pree feeks") and a slew of mnemonic devices to help amateur grammarians keep ifs, ands and buts in check. It's these small digressions that make the book so readable, even for those with a deep-seated hatred for grammatical do-goodery. O'Conner gleefully eviscerates poor sentence construction and dangling participles, soothes verb tension and debunks the frequently intimidating semicolon with finesse. Tempered with a heavy dose of wit (reaching its nadir in her chapter on clichés), O'Conner's lively treatise is as vital as a dictionary for those who wish to be taken seriously in speech, in print or on Facebook.

About the Author
Patricia T. O'Conner, a former editor at the New York Times Book Review, has written for many magazines and newspapers. She is the author of two other books on language and writing, Words Fail Me: What Everyone Who Writes Should Know About Writing and You Send Me: Getting It Right When You Write Online.

Useful and fun
By Arsen Azizyan
This is an essential handbook for any grammar Nazi. Prepare to have many persistent doubts dispelled and nagging questions settled - not only about grammar and spelling, but also pronunciation (including that of the word "pronunciation"). This book will help you feel even more annoyingly superior to the uneducated unfortunates around you.

What's more, the sample sentences in the book are almost worth the price by themselves. "A gradual crescendo in the percussion section reached a climax that woke the audience." "When he's not fighting crime, Bruce dresses like a normal adult."

These days, as our entire nation has forgotten the use of the apostrophe, everyone could use at least one grammar book on their shelves, and I can't think of a clearer and friendlier one than this.

Don't be fooled - this is a seriously GOOD book!
By A Customer
I've owned WOE IS I for many months now. It never crossed my mind that someone could be misled by the title; in fact, that's what attracted me to it in the first place. I just skimmed over several of the recent reviews at this site and I'm appalled at the prissy comments about the author's "authority". Well, if this country has any standards left with respect to grammar and usage, I'm betting you can find them at the New York Times. That's where Ms. O'Conner learned her trade, and that's a good enough recommendation for me. This book is useful in my line of work - social science research - week in and week out. I HIGHLY recommend it to all types - students, business people, and anyone else who wants to say what they mean.

Where Opposites Converge
By Bruce Kendall
Grammar and fun. How odd those two words look in such close proximity to each other. Granted, Fowler can be amusing at times, particularly when he's in full peevish mode and attired in full curmudgeonly armor. Mencken certainly summons up a fairly regular chuckle, when dealing with topics related to English/American usage.
But if you're like me, you tend to gloss over those exceptions and hearken back to 9th and 10th grade English classes, featuring Messrs. Strunk & White, supplemented by the latest book of torture published by McGraw Hill, with an exercise book on top of that. Ugh!
I wish now that Ms. O'Conner's witty, 227 pg. text had been available at that time and that I would have had English teachers enlightened enough to use it, even if only as a supplement.
"Woe is I" is a pleasure to read. She accomplishes that rare deed of sallying forth against the convulsive, recalcitrant, obfuscating, hydra-headed monster that is English Grammar and actually coming out of the battle victorious.
She accomplishes this through sheer force of wit. This is not your typical handbook of style, as you might glean from reading over the sample pages. That will give you an idea of the charm and humor that Ms. O'Conner brings to bear on various grammatical bugaboos. Some of my favorite examples: "Back to the drawing board. 'Back to Roget's Thesaurus.'" "Agree to disagree. 'People never really agree to disagree. They just get tired of arguing.'" "Bite the bullet. 'Save your teeth.'"
This book is helpful, no matter what your level of English proficiency. I recommend it to students, writers, lovers of language, Reference book junkies, word-freaks, ESL teachers, English teachers, teachers in other disciplines who need help in grading papers or to anyone else who wants to brush up his/her grammar.

"Nutting's outrageous writing makes my face split with laughter. . . . She's glorious chaos and utterly original."—Lydia Millet

"A dark catalog of behavior for her characters and the result is a kind of human bestiary, if humans were programmed to go down in flames, to run themselves aground, to seek ruin on every occasion. . . . (They) illuminate how people hide behind their pursuits, concealing what matters most to them while striving, and usually failing, to be loved."—Ben Marcus

Surprising!
By Amazon Customer
I am not normally a fan of short story collections, but this one was unexpectedly different. It is flat and honest, but in the way of a comic without a straight man. If there were a new wave of feminine neo-existentialist comic fiction, it would vote Alissa Nutting to the office of Treasurer or higher.

Bravo!
By J. Wainwright
This selection of smart, surreal short stories is unpredictable and exciting to read. I prefer the longer stories that develop characters and stretch the imagination, rather than the one to two page segments. Its a dark read, layered and explorative of metaphor and an altered universe for women, but well worth diving into. If you enjoy poetry and the short story genre, this book is right up your alley.

A Desert Island Book
By Chance Lee
That's it. I'm done reading. Like, forever. I don't know if I'll ever read another set of stories so dark, so twisted, so funny, so romantic, so tragic, so gut-wrenchingly sad as the tales in this collection. If I had to choose one book to read over and over again forever, in some sort of book-reading purgatory, it would be this one.

There are eighteen stories in this collection, all told by a first-person female narrator, whom I believe is always nameless (except in "Bandleader's Girlfriend", although she doesn't go by Claudia anymore, she goes by "Sorcerella van Crystal")

Here are just a few of the story concepts:

A woman and four men are boiled alive for dinner, and have one last conversation before they die.
A woman kidnaps a panda from a zoo.
A woman has holes drilled into her bones so that she can host an ant colony inside her body.
A woman buys her mother's cryogenically frozen body at auction.
A woman falls in love with the devil.
A woman falls in love with a garden gnome.
A woman in a rat costume wants to have children.
A woman, who was born a man, gets blackmailed by her pimp.

And that's less than half of them!

There are true masterpieces in here. I will think of "Ant Colony", "Hellion", "She-Man", and "Porn Star" for years. Years. Together, these stories run the gamut from horror, manipulation, romance, love, tragedy, fear, shame, ennui, and disgust, although if you tried to match those themes and feelings to the stories based on title alone, you'd probably be completely wrong. "Hellion", in which a woman with acid-spewing boobs (like Fem-bots have bred with Alien) falls in love with Satan might just be one of the most romantic stories I've read. Seriously. I love it.

The ones I mentioned are all longer stories that can be read again and again and really dug into... although I'm not sure if I want to go deeper into "Ant Colony" than I already have. Sometimes I feel like I have ants inside me...

Not all the stories are lengthy. Some of the stories are only a few pages long. It takes three minutes to read "Zookeeper" but, man, that story sticks with you for days.

Some favorite quotes, in no particular order:

"Whatever you do," I thought, "don't pee inside the devil."

I'll go home and wait for her to call me and turn me into something special for however long she wants, and this time I won't forget to be grateful.

Feeling cold after being hot for so long hurt somewhat. It made me realize that it probably was painful to breathe for the first time when I was born.

The sad thing is, everybody is always somebody, even when he's nobody. And I used to be a nobody's somebody.

"There is no purpose. Purpose is a concept someone made up to feel better about how weird everything is."

"That's the thing about symbols. They mean different things to different people."

Excellent Overall Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
By Christopher E. Naujok
The most readable introductory text to quantum mechanics that I have found. It covers all the core basic topics with great clarity and builds up the subject through clear examples and demonstrations. I would strongly recommend it for anyone's physics library.

Excellent. Clear and Very Well Written.
By A Customer
This book is one of the clearest and well written introductions to the subject I've read. I recommend it hands down over Griffiths or Cohen-Tannoudji. My only gripe is that it needs more problems (and solutions too) at the end of each chapter.

Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tsu, Jane English (translator), Toinette Lippe (editor), Jacob Needleman (introduction)

For nearly two generations, this translation of the Tao Te Ching has been the standard for those seeking access to the wisdom of Taoist thought. Now Jane English and her long-time editor, Toinette Lippe, have refreshed and revised the translation, so that it more faithfully reflects the Classical Chinese in which it was first written, while taking into account changes in our own language and eliminating any lingering infelicities. This beautiful edition includes an introduction by the well-known writer and scholar of philosophy and comparative religion, Jacob Needleman.

Lao Tsu's philosophy is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it, for to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Nature provides everything without requiring payment or thanks. It does so without discrimination. So let us present the same face to everyone and treat them all as equals, however they may behave.

If we watch carefully, we will see that work proceeds more quickly and easily if we stop "trying", if we stop putting in so much extra effort, if we stop looking for results. In the clarity of a still and open mind, truth will be reflected. Te - which may be translated as "virtue" or "strength" - lies always in Tao meaning "the way" or "natural law". In other words: Simply be.

clean tao
By A Customer
This is the translation of The Tao that woke me up, made sense to me in a way no other translation had. It doesn't have the "wrought" feeling that most poetic translations have. I didn't feel the translator behind the words, and I could picture The Old Guy, sitting on his hill, writing this down.
Moreover, the introduction by Needleman, missing in the 25-year edition , is stunning, particularly in his explanation of "virtue" as a verb, an act rather than an ideal. I'd trade the photos, however beautiful, for this introduction.

Bueatiful book, but part of the translation is questionable
By justbeing0
I was born and raised in China and have lived in the US for over 20 years (came in my adulthood). I have liked the philosophical Taoism (please don't confuse it with the religious Taoism, which started much later with quite different belief systems) since my late teens. And I have been interested in the art of translation for some years.

I just compared a few lines of the English translation of this version (by Gai-Fu Feng, Jane English) with the one by John C. H. Wu (1899-1986, according to Wikipedia), published in 1961, and started to notice some differences. For example, at the beginning of chapter 2, in this book it translates:

"Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty because there is ugniness.
All can see good as good only because there is evil."

While in John C. H. Wu's translation, there two lines go as:

"When all the world recognizes beauty as beauty,
this in itself is ugliness.
When all the world recognizes good as good, this in itself is evil."

I feel the John C. H. Wu's version is much more accurate or closer to the meaning of the original Chinese text.

Another example, in Chapter 7, the last three lines:

"The wise stay behind, and are thus ahead.
They are detached, thus at one with all.
Through selfless act, they they attain fulfillment."

John C. H. Wu's translation goes as:

"Therefore, the Sage wants to remain behind,
But finds himself at the head of others;
Reckons himself out,
But finds himself safe and secure.
Is it not because he is selfless
That his Self is realized?"

Here I feel Wu's version is more accurate, and shows much better understanding of the ancient Chinese culture and philosophy. I would like to type the Chinese text here, but the characters didn't show when I tried. I think the Amazon's text box doesn't support Chinese font.

One more example, chapter 11, the last two lines:

"Therefore, profit comes from what is there.
Uselessness from what is not there."

John C. H. Wu's version:

"Thus, while the tangible has advantages,
It is the intangible that makes it useful."

Again, judging based on the original text in Chinese, personally I think the latter is more accurate.

In some of the examples, I sort of can see why English translated some of the lines the way they are, but that shows some level of imperfect understanding of Chinese, and in some other instances, the translation seems not to make any sense to me. For example, I can see that she saw the word "li" as "profit", which, I think, in the context, is not very accurate; but "uselessness from what is not there" doesn't make any sense in the context.

I don't mean to trash this version of translation, and probably English readers can get a lot out of it anyway. It's just that in this era of globalization, I hope that we would reduce misinformation over time.

Beautiful translation
By William C. Everett
I have always found the Tao Te Ching to be a very clear guide for life. I own a few different translations and this is the one that I always come back to. It is translated with a poetic style that highlights the simplicity of the way. Because you can plumb this work to any depth of understanding you want, anything more than the minimal bacground would be arbitrary.

Also, I am probably alone here, but I recommend the book without the pictures, which I think artificially establish a mood that may not be appropriate for the chapter you're working through.

I would also emphasize that this translation is not for scholars. It does not contain a great deal of commentary or references to the myriad ways a given word or phrase could be translated.

Lyrics Alley: A Novel, by Leila Aboulela

Lyrics Alley is the evocative story of an affluent Sudanese family shaken by the shifting powers in their country and the near-tragedy that threatens the legacy they've built for decades.

In 1950's Sudan, the powerful Abuzeid dynasty has amassed a fortune through their trading firm. With Mahmoud Bey at its helm, they can do no wrong. But when Mahmoud's son, Nur, the brilliant, handsome heir to the business empire, suffers a debilitating accident, the family stands divided in the face of an uncertain future. As British rule nears its end, the country is torn between modernizing influences and the call of traditions past—a conflict reflected in the growing tensions between Mahmoud's two wives: the younger, Nabilah, longs to return to Egypt and escape "backward-looking" Sudan; while Waheeba lives traditionally behind veils and closed doors. It's not until Nur asserts himself outside the cultural limits of his parents that his own spirit and the frayed bonds of his family begin to mend.

Moving from Sudanese alleys to cosmopolitan Cairo and a decimated postcolonial Britain, this sweeping tale of desire, loss, despair, and reconciliation is one of the most accomplished portraits ever written about Sudanese society at the time of independence.

Not Without Laughter (Dover Thrift Editions), by Langston Hughes

A shining star of the Harlem Renaissance movement, Langston Hughes is one of modern literature's most revered African-American authors. Although best known for his poetry, Hughes produced in Not Without Laughter a powerful and pioneering classic novel.
This stirring coming-of-age tale unfolds in 1930s rural Kansas. A poignant portrait of African-American family life in the early twentieth century, it follows the story of young Sandy Rogers as he grows from a boy to a man. We meet Sandy's mother, Annjee, who works as a housekeeper for a wealthy white family; his strong-willed grandmother, Hager; Jimboy, Sandy's father, who travels the country looking for work; Aunt Tempy, the social climber; and Aunt Harriet, the blues singer who has turned away from her faith.
A fascinating chronicle of a family's joys and hardships, Not Without Laughter is a vivid exploration of growing up and growing strong in a racially divided society. A rich and important work, it masterfully echoes the black American experience.

Laughter and Living
By Eric Anderson
Despite his considerable output of poetry, short stories and autobiographical work, this is Langston Hughes' only novel. It is the tremendously crafted story of Sandy, a black child of the 1920s in rural Kansas. In poignant tightly written chapters, Hughes' depicts various events in Sandy's life often slipping into the perspective of those closest to him. Sandy lives most his life with his strong-willed and deeply religious grandmother Aunt Hager. She is a benevolent woman who desires peaceful racial relations despite the overwhelming amount of racism and discrimination professed by both white and black community members. Sandy's mother Annjee is a loving and hard working woman eternally devoted to her husband Jimboy who is a good hearted man constantly on the move. Sandy's aunt Tempy is a well-off woman trying to immerse herself in white society and denigrating her own race in the process. His other aunt Harriett is a wilful woman who turns from the church for a different kind of existence. Through these expertly drawn characters, Sandy views their examples and he must make the choices that will effect his future. The novel is a tremendous chronicle of the struggle of a family to survive financially. It gives accounts of the psychological dilemma created by growing in a racially divided society and the diffuse joy in life that can be found even in troubling circumstances.
Maya Angelou wrote of Not Without Laughter: "This book was written when preachers had to be poets and poets were preachers, because they needed to be available to all the people all the time." The messages this novel gives are not subtle. But, through its varied perspectives and eloquently written prose, it envelops the issues it preaches with emotionally edifying ideas. It leaves the reader with a feeling of deep connection to all the characters, particularly the beautiful Sandy in whom we invest our hope and trust to fulfil his potential to become a good, intelligent and strong man who does not feel limited by his racial heritage despite any restrictions society may attempt to place for him. Although it may be a shame that Hughes never wrote another novel as he aptly demonstrated his skill in this one, Not Without Laughter stands as shining work be a skilled artist.

An Artist for all People!!!
By T. Kelley
For those who like and admire the poetic works of Langston Hughes, this is the book to purchase. This book collects all the "known" and "published" poems written by Hughes within his lifetime and at the different stages in his life. You have the so-called "race" poems that celebrate the dignity and beauty of black Americans, you have the poems of social protest such as those written during the 1930's that deal with inequality and injustice common to all regardless of race, the poems meant for children, and you even have the trite subject matter about love lost and found and springtime, nearly all written in the style of jazz and the blues that Hughes loved so much. Congrates must go to Arnold Rampersad and David Rossel for the effort in gathering these poems in their most current rendition as Hughes last wrote them. An effort was made by the editors to put the poems in the order they were written and published. A number of the poems were meant to be accompanied by jazz and blues music or read aloud in a specific way to drive home the point of the piece.

At first glance, all the poems collected in this book appear simple and straight foreward. But, Hughes was skilled at putting a lot of meaning into just a few lines of his work. An example are the poems "Cross" and "Mulatto" which tell how the mixed bloodlines of every decendent of the pure blooded African slave and European came to exist today in modern black America and how prejudice denied them the right to claim all their heritages (political correct stereotypes, labels, are doing the same today!!!). My favorite of the poems here is "Dream Variation." Carl Van Vetchen truncated some of the poem in his introduction to the the WEARY BLUES, the first book by Hughes. Langston's love for black Americans is evident throughout all his catalogue of work from essays, short stories novels, and plays as well as poetry. But this affection and the black pride he possessed did not exclude the bond of brotherhood he felt for all people regardless of race and color. This isn't to say that behind the famous smile there wasn't an angry black man. Hughes was angry at all the injustices against black Americans, but he did not let his anger consume and blind him. He bridled his anger and used it constructively, the testament of a true artist of the any people.

An amazing story of the influences and decisions in youth
By A Customer
Langston Hughes is a truly gifted writer. In this story he shows six different characters, all afflicted by racism and the numerous tactics each devises to combat its force. Their methods include, hating white america, enduring the blow, assimilating, laughing in the faces and then there is Sandy...He is slowing coming of age amidst all of these adults that he loves and admires, but soon he shall have to pick a path of his own. He knows that he must fight against the threat of racisim with out developing so much anger it consumes him as well. He knows must stand up for the race and culture he loves and some how advance his people with the power of his life. This story, is one of the best depictions of a black family that I have come across and can relate to. I miss Langston, and I love his legacy.
