Enjoyed it

This book gave me a basic knowledge and understanding of what to look for when choosing an investment. I already had an understanding of what I wanted to accomplish, but this book gave me the tools to dig deeper into the kind of information that will allow me to make an educated decision with my investing strategy. Great read.

I must admit that finances was never a subject that interested me. I always found the subject boring and too complicated, never really took the time to read about it.

Not long ago I had to make some investments choices. Since my background on the subject was limited, it was a bit harsh to make the proper decisions.

This book gladly helped me understand the process of stock market and gave me good references for the future. It is explained keeping in mind that the reader is, like me, a beginner in the field or does not want to read big and painful bbooks... And at the end you find yourself more enlightened on the subject instead of being lost in too much information that you don't know where to begin with....

The author gives some tips & resources, and you get to choose whatever is relevant for your situation.

Now I know what to look for, where to look for and where to invest; I will not go blind in this field anymore!

I am still learning about the markets even though I am 70 years old.
This book helps because it gets directly to the nitty gritty of understanding how to invest and what methods suit different types of people.

The League of Atonement versus the Literary Avenger

A hazing accident at a Harvard dormitory leaves a young man hopelessly crippled. The 35 men responsible for the injury form a League of Atonement to help support their victim. Eventually the victim discovers he has great literary ability and becomes a lionized author. All his books have as their theme the murder of various characters modeled after various members of the League of Atonement. The victim has become a Literary Avenger. Then one member dies violently at a reunion while in close proximity to the Literary Avenger. The survivors receive an anonymous poem suggesting the Literary Avenger has become a literal avenger. Another dies of poisoning shortly after a meeting with the Avenger. Another group of poems goes out. A third disappears without a trace. Another anonymous poem goes out to the League. They have transmogrified from the League of Atonement to the League of Frightened Men.
They consult with Nero Wolfe, and he undertakes to relieve their fears for an obscene fee. Wolfe feels that all he needs is the answers to three questions and he can corkscrew a confession out of the Literary Avenger. Before Wolfe can pull it off, his target gets himself arrested for the murder of a fourth member of the League, and it looks like an open and shut case. Wolfe stands to lose his fee. If the Avenger gets electrocuted for the fourth murder, the League won't owe him a cent.
Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's confidential assistant, sees the problem quite simply. All Wolfe has to do is exonerate the Literary Avenger in the fourth murder and get confessions to the first three. The pair of detectives travels a complex path to achieve Archie's simple solution. Archie gets poisoned, Wolfe gets kidnapped, and it all culminates in one of the most Machiavellian maneuvers ever to spring from Wolfe's fertile imagination.

Good book, getting tired of the typos

Referring to the Kindle edition: I am a long-time Nero Wolfe fan, and am slowly collecting the books on Kindle. I am discovering that typos in Kindle books are almost the norm, and this edition of "League of Frightened Men" is no exception. The nature of the typos indicates that someone ran the original book through a scanner and didn't bother to do a lot of editing.

If a book is issued by the publisher (Bantam) in a Kindle edition at essentially the same price as the paperback, I expect some serious attention to formatting and detail. On the other hand, "Fer de Lance" contained a completely screwed up line of text that had been copied exactly from the same printing error in the original Bantam edition.

Would it be asking too much to have someone read these over before selling them?

I really loved this book even before I read "Stout Fellow" by "O.E.McBride." Her insightful analysis of all of Rex Stout's work confirms what I already suspected: Rex Stout's earliest books were his best.

This one can be forgiven some narrative excesses (the pink tie and soup, for example) in fair exchange for some of Wolfe's best Wolfeisms. The one about membership in the Hardvard Club is in this book.

And finally, Paul Chapin is a much better "Moriarty" than Arnold Zeck. He's much deeper and more complex, in fact, than virtually any other of Stout's other characters, doubly subtle by the way in which his villainy is propounded.

Fetishism, kinky stuff - all here more so that in anything else of Wolfe's that comes to mind. And it is expertly read in audio.

About the Author

Robyn King is a qualified pastry chef with 40 years experience in the industry. She is a very experienced cake/cookie decorator/teacher,and regularly does demonstrations at specific functions. Robyn belongs to cake/cookie decorating groups where she is able to not only share many years of knowledge but also learn new techniques and tips from other members.

Her passion started when, as a young child, Robyn remembers standing on a chair making cookies with her mother. At the age of 14 she attended a local Community College where she learnt the finer details of decorating. This knowledge was the key factor in gaining work experience which then led to an apprenticeship as a pastry cook. During this time Robyn won numerous awards in every category of Stage 1, II and II at Technical College.

In 2013 Robyn opened her own shop The Embellished Cake Creations supplying decorating equipment, baking products, and running classes – whilst continuing to keep her hand in decorating wedding/special occasion cakes and cookies.

Embellished Cookies is Robyn’s first book.

About the Author
Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

Katherine Schipper is the Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting at the Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. She is a former Board member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), a past president of the American Accounting Association and a winner of its Outstanding Educator award, and a member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Francis is the Douglas and Josie Breeden Doctoral Professor of Accounting and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business. Her research and teaching expertise in financial reporting, equity valuation, and security analysts' role in the capital markets has led to over a dozen teaching awards.

complete and clear but not concise

Used this book as a support for Financial Accounting class in Business School. It is very complete, provides clear explanation and many examples. However it is not concise, and for that reason of limited use. Explanations are often drawn out and the use of examples is sometimes excessive. This means, that in practice, it cannot be used as a quick look-up reference book.

Would have been a 5-star textbook if it covered the same material in half as much text.

About the Author
Charles Ksir received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington. Following his postdoctoral training in Neurobiology at the Worcester Foundation in Massachusetts, he began a 34-year career in teaching and research at the University of Wyoming, where he also served in a variety of administrative positions. Now a professor emeritus, he focuses his efforts on teaching and textbook writing. He has taught the psychology course Drugs and Behaviour to more than three thousand students since 1972 and has received several teaching awards.

Dr. Carl Hart is an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Columbia University and is also a Research Scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. A major focus of Dr. Hart’s research is to understand the complex interactions between neurobiological and environmental factors that mediate and modulate the actions of drugs of abuse, including drug-taking behaviour and cognitive performance. Dr. Hart’s research has been supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for the past several years. In addition to his substantial research responsibilities, Dr. Hart teaches an undergraduate Drugs and Behaviour course and was recently awarded Columbia University’s highest teaching award.

Nice and compact

Nice and compact. Had to get this for my addiction class. The chapters are nice and detailed and helped me get my homework and required reading done. Studying this textbook helped me ace my exams. I like that this textbook is smaller and lighter than normal textbooks. I wished all textbooks were this size.

A talent of astounding intelligence and background

I have to go five stars on this one even though "Wet Night" was rather difficult. Beckett can be simultaneously comic, dark, merciless, pitiless, intelligent, satirical and creative. The times in which he is brilliant, which are many, he writes some of the most elegant prose that I know of. He is obviously a talent of astounding intelligence and background knowledge, so you best be on your toes while reading the majority of his work -- though admittedly, that will not always work.

These ten connected stories are highly enjoyable and stimulating and you have an excellent opportunity to improve on your vocabulary as well. I must go on, I can't go on, OK, I'll stop.

This book was a wonderful discovery, I had always loved Beckett's plays but to find this book of prose and follow the life of his character Bel was so amazing. The use of vocabulary buy Beckett and the images therein rivals Joyce's Dubliners. Get this book and read it, what an undiscovered treasure it is.

Published for his eightieth birthday, this remarkable book serves as summary of this great theologian's life's work

Including a lengthy and life-long interview, some sermons given shortly before publication, other documents and correspondence, as well as a Scriptural and poetical selection, etc., this seemingly slim volume contains conprehensive and comprehensible material from throughout the life of this great Catholic theologian, the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, rendering much difficult and technical material more accessible to the layman, explaining many doubts, clarifying concerns and misunderstandings, and making this great and warm and human heart and soul blessed by God with a mighty intellect and love for God and the Church closer to us all.

The sermons here transcribed are especially helpful, as they were delivered shortly before publicaiton. One of these sermons beautifully (as always with this great and Catholic Theologian) declares his deep Faith in the Resurrection, with his profound attempt at explanation of this Faith.

A few people, beating a long dead horse, continue unfairly to question unjustly this profound Catholic soul, yet his works will live on long after us who are here and now. His great trilogy beginning with Jesus: An Experiment in Christology and continuing through Christ: The Experience of Jesus as Lord, when the dust has settled and God continues whatever form of ecclesiology and apostolic succession a future humanity finds most significant in a future millenium through the on-going Pilgrim process of Ecclesiogenesis -, the prodigious theological work of the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx will be gratefully received and respected as has been his fellow Dominican St Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica (translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province) (5 Volume Set) once the outraged controversy from the Angelic Doctor's own contemporaries had long been forgotten and we could learn to catch up with Aquinas enough to declare him the "official" theology, comprehending in part his intent, elaborate and minute methodology and his labor's true significance for understanding our Faith. Thus shall come to Father Schillebeeckx. The bookburners cannot win, as one fictional one did so tragically and painfully and Pyrricly and temporarily in the semiotic philosopher Umberto Ecco's great novel The Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript.

Fortunately we do not have to wait for (and indeed we cannot physically wait to see but from Heaven) what future generations of Catholics will receive and comprehend, as this brief volume makes much which is not now understood very clear, including not only a complete biographical interview and an excellent comprehensive inrtoduction, but also discussing several points of theology within their historical context.

For example much background noise has arisen around the poorly understood term transignification. A few have whittled this word down to an easily digestible monosyllable of sign, having limited their experience and understanding of sign to, for instance, that of a concrete physical highway road sign which indicates the way to go to a certain destination using alphanumeric and graphical symbols which are not in themselves the way but only point out the way. Thus the sign to Cincinnatti is not in reality the road to Cincinatti.

This is very far from the true meaning of transignification, which comes from the Lacanian and semiotic and philosophical terms for signification, signifiers, signified, etc. The closest we may come in our common parlance is the word significant, which has itself lost much of its precision, power and, well, significance.

Thus a certain few stimulate and excite themselves to a great and delightful (for them) fever pitch by purposefully misunderstanding and mistinterpreting the true meaning of this term, inventing by their own dim and deceitful lights heresy where none exists.

I refer them therefore to pages 23 and 24 of this present volume where in the midst of interview questions regarding his post-Conciliar audience with Pope Paul VI, Father Schillebeeckx takes the opportunity to discuss this very term. Throughout this bascially biographical interview, Father Schillebeeckx humbly and passionately takes the light off himself and turns, as a great Domincan teacher and preacher, to explaining points of theology and of Faith, making of this interview something far more than originally intended.

Thus we here read (please remember the rough English translation cannot accurately reflect the Reverend Father's own words, nor are the footnotes his): "The Pope told me, 'I am truly content with what you said in your lectures at Domus Mariae on the Eucharist.' At that time I was defending transignification. The encyclical Mysterium fidei had just come out (this was Spetember 1965) and I began my lecture by praising the encyclical. I said that I was against transignification understood as pure symbolism and that transubstantiation(13) is a transignification in an ontological sense(14). The Pope told me: 'They've reported you've become one of us.' I didn't understand what he meant; I had the sensation of not having been clear. Why should I have become 'one of us?' I am one of the Church. Who are these 'us?'

"I certainly had observations to make on the encyclical, but I expressed them blandly. I had observations on transignification as pure symbolism. For me, transignification was ontological, something quite different from a physical transignification. Someone tried to explain the expression used by Paul VI as meaning that the Pope was not opposed to my ideas on the Eucharist.

"However, I didn't think this a very happy expression. He encouraged me to continue my research, expressed himself content with the lectures. I wanted to defend myself by saying something about my theology, but he wouldn't let me. At the end of the audience he took out a rosary from a drawer and said, 'Take it to your father.' And what about my mother? He gave me another one. Then he called the secretary who brought in the photographer. That was the end of the audience.

"At the door I met the Benedictine abbot Basil Hume, who was to become Archbishop of Westminister. He said to me, 'Fr. Schillebeeckx, keep going as you are. (pp. 23,24)"

The footnotes referred to state: "(13) transubstantiation is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignificaiton is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignification is a radical transformation of the ultimate meaning of what the bread is after cnosecration. Before consecration the bread is nutrition for the body, whereas after consecration the bread is totally spiritual nutrition. A phenomenal book on the quest for the Self

Aziz Kristof is now Anadi. He came out of self imposed seclusion last year. Anadi lives in Almora, in the north of India and holds spiritual retreats, all over the world, the latest of which is in Israel.

Before going into seclusion, He had authored two books - The Human Buddha and Transmission of Awakening, and co-authored another book Enlightenment Beyond Traditions with his soul brother Houman Emani.

Simply put The Human Buddha is the most advanced book on seeking you will ever find. Yes, this book is even more advanced than Nisargadatta Maharaj's I am That, by whom Aziz was profoundly impacted. If you have reached this far, then consider it to be an act of providence. Read this book, and prepare to be transformed. The first half (1/5th of the book) consists of Aziz's guided meditations, in which He talks about absolute meditation, and living in the present. The second half (most of the rest of the book) consists of question/answer sessions in which Aziz answers the questions of His disciples.

At the fag end of the book comes a short, but profoundly inspiring autobiographical account, in which Aziz, talks about His early childhood, His growing up years, how He had to compulsorily serve in the army, His subsequent escape and travels throughout Asia, and His final journey to India. He finally attains enlightenment in Kerala, to the south of India.

Unlike most other masters (many of them genuine) who seek to assemble large groups of disciples around themselves, Aziz has no such ambitions. He wants to keep His work private, and open to only the genuine seeker, not someone who is looking for thrills or a sense of mystery. While this limits His appeal, it also makes Him more open and available to the genuine seeker. My search has ended after reading this book, and I am profoundly grateful to have found Anadi.

A Deep Understanding and Incredible Work

This large book consists of two parts. The first 1/4 to 1/3 is Aziz' guided meditation. There is some insightful material but the real meat of this book is in the remainder which is question and answer which is grouped into chapters of like questions/answers. An amazing book, something like Nisargadatta's "I Am That", that I would return to time and time again.

I bought this phrase book & CD because I am going on a trip to Norway and wanted to learn enough Norwegian to be able to get around without hardship. I was hoping that the CD would teach the language from the beginner's level. The format of the CD is as follows- the phrase is spoken once in English, then once slowly in Norwegian, then once quickly in Norwegian. Then it moves on to the next word. The CD should be used more as a pronunciation guide rather than as a tool for learning the basics.

You will not need this book for your cruise to Norway

The Norwegians speak excellent English. Do not bother to buy this book unless you are actually learning the language. I did not need it for my cruise to various ports in Norway. The Rough Guide to Norway will help you to find information about the services, culture, history, and food of Norway.
